The first few months of a new school year can be exciting but also may be a challenging and emotional time to navigate. Dr. Daya encourages parents and caregivers to be mindful of signs their child or youth may be struggling and shares steps families can take to promote well-being, such as:

• Promoting physical health and wellness,
• Encouraging a healthy sleep routine, and
• Creating safe and supportive environments to talk openly with children to address their concerns and validate their feelings.

After a summer lull, expect increased traffic around schools as students return to class.

BCEHS paramedics are reminding drivers to take extra care around school zones and nearby playgrounds.

đźš—slow down

⚠️stay alert

📵avoid distractions

đź•‘leave early, allow extra time for drop off and pick up

Remember children may dart out from between cars and cross mid-block without any warning. BCEHS paramedics and dispatch staff thank you for paying extra attention as students head back to school.

As electric scooters rise in popularity, the emergency department at BC Children’s Hospital is seeing more visits from children with injuries related to e-scooter use. Common injuries include road rash, cuts, broken bones and concussions and, in severe instances, brain injury.

E-scooters do not offer much safety protection for users and can be more unstable than bikes due to having smaller wheels and different centre of gravity than a traditional push bike.

E-scooters are not toys and are not permitted to be used by anyone under the age of 16. Youth over the age of 16 should follow e-scooter safety rules, including wearing a helmet, only riding with one person on the scooter at a time and following the rules of the road.
