"I'm fine."

How many times have you said that when, actually, you're anything but?

Maybe you're exhausted, you've got a hundred things going round in your head, or you're just feeling a bit fed up with everything.

Nothing is necessarily wrong. You're getting on with life, doing what needs to be done and keeping everything ticking along.

So you say you're fine.

The trouble is, when you've been doing that for long enough, it can become your normal.

You get used to feeling tired. You get used to putting yourself last. You get used to having so much on your mind that you can't remember the last time you properly switched off.

You might not even realise how much things have changed until someone asks how you're doing and you genuinely don't know how to answer.

I hear this quite often from women I work with. They can't always put their finger on what's bothering them. They just know they don't feel quite like themselves anymore.

One of my favourite parts of this work is seeing the difference when someone starts to feel that change. When things that have been bothering them don't have quite the same impact, and they begin to feel more like themselves again.

So perhaps it's worth asking yourself...

Am I actually fine, or have I just got used to feeling this way?

There's a difference. You don't have to settle for feeling just 'fine'.

Anxiety has a way of creeping into parts of your life you wouldn't necessarily connect with it.

Perhaps it started with a few restless nights, feeling a bit more stressed than usual or finding yourself worrying about things that wouldn't normally bother you.

Then, gradually, other things start to change.

You're not sleeping as well, so you're tired before the day has even started.

Your patience isn't what it used to be. Little things irritate you more than they should.

You find yourself overthinking conversations, questioning decisions or worrying about what other people think.

Your confidence takes a knock.

You might even start turning down invitations or avoiding things you used to enjoy, simply because they feel like too much effort.

Before you know it, anxiety is affecting far more than the thing you were originally anxious about.

That's the ripple effect.

Often, women come to me knowing something needs to change, but struggling to explain exactly what it is.

They just know they don't feel quite like themselves anymore.

The thing is, you don't have to wait until anxiety has taken over every part of your life before doing something about it.

My Serene Mind Reset is three sessions where we work together on what's contributing to how you're feeling, building on each session so you can start noticing changes in your everyday life.

If you're recognising yourself in any of this, send me a message. We can have a chat about what's been happening and how I might be able to help.

You can also find out more through the link in the comments.

18 years.

That's how long Gillian had been carrying guilt about something that had happened in her past.

She'd got on with her life, but she was still ruminating on what had happened and the feelings were still there.

We worked on it in one session.

Gillian later sent me this:

“I suffered from guilt over an incident that happened over 18 years ago. One session with Wendy and her chosen technique worked.

Since this approach was taken I don't ruminate on the incident as I did before. I feel so much better for this intervention.”

I think this is such an important example of the work I do.

Time passing doesn't necessarily change how you feel about something.

You can understand it. Rationalise it. Tell yourself you should be over it by now.

Yet when you think about it, the feeling is still there.

That's what we worked on.

Gillian didn't need to spend weeks talking about what had happened. We focused on changing the response she was still having to it.

If you've got something from your past that can still bring up anger, guilt, hurt or another feeling you'd rather not keep carrying, come and see me.

One-to-one sessions are £125, online or at The Serenity Studio in Barnard Castle.

What are you putting up with because you've got used to it?

Maybe you avoid certain situations because they make you anxious.

You still get angry when you think about something that happened years ago.

There's something you'd love to do, but the fear wins every time.

You overthink what you've said, what someone else said, what they might have meant...

After a while, it can just become normal.

“I've always been like this.”

“This is just me.”

Except it doesn't have to stay that way.

These are exactly the things people come to see me with.

Sometimes they've lived with them for years.

Then we work together and something that used to get such a big reaction just... doesn't anymore.

What have you got used to that you'd actually quite like to change?

Someone's off with you. At least... you think they are.

You sent a message.

They've read it.

No reply.

At first you don't think much of it. Then a bit of time passes.

Was it something I said?

Maybe they're annoyed with me.

Did something happen the last time I saw them?

So you read your message again. Maybe check when they were last online. Start thinking back to your last conversation.

All from one thing you actually know:

They haven't replied yet.

Your mind has filled in everything else.

That's often where the uncomfortable feeling comes from. Not the unanswered message itself, but what you've started to make it mean.

What if they're just busy?

What if they've opened it at the wrong time and forgotten to go back?

What if absolutely nothing is wrong?

Notice where your mind goes before you decide you know what someone else is thinking.

If you've ever lost half an evening over a message like this, I've got something coming for you this week.

One of the things I really love about my work is seeing the difference in someone from when they arrive to when they leave.

They might come in wound up about something, going over and over it in their head and not really knowing how to stop it.

90 minutes later we're talking about the same thing and it just doesn't have the same pull anymore.

That's what I'm interested in. Not spending weeks picking apart why you're overthinking.

I want to know what your mind is doing now, what you'd rather it did instead, and what we can change.

I had someone describe it recently as their mind feeling “serene” afterwards. I'll happily take that.

If there's something taking up far too much room in your head at the moment, that's exactly the sort of thing you can bring to me.

You might have heard the word Samhain around this time of year, but do you know what it actually means?

Samhain is an ancient Celtic festival traditionally celebrated from the evening of 31st October into 1st November.

It marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter — a turning point in the year as the lighter months gave way to the darker ones.

There was also a belief that at Samhain the boundary between this world and the Otherworld was thinner, which is where some of the traditions around remembering and honouring those who had died come from.

I love the idea of Samhain as a turning point.

We spend a lot of time looking ahead. What are we doing next? What needs sorting? What do we want to change? What are our plans?

Samhain gives us a reason to look back for a moment too.

Think about where you were this time last year.

What has happened since then?

What have you done that you're proud of?

What have you learnt about yourself?

What would you like to take forward with you as you move into the next season?

You don't need to make it into a big ritual. You could light a candle, sit with a cuppa and give yourself ten minutes to think about the year you've had.

Sometimes we’re so busy moving on to the next thing that we forget to notice how far we’ve already come.

There’s something a little magical about this time of year.

Halloween, Samhain, darker evenings, candles lit, autumn leaves everywhere… I love all of it.

Samhain traditionally marks the end of one season and the beginning of another, and I quite like the idea of using it as a chance to stop and take stock too.

What’s been good this year that you want more of?

What have you learnt about yourself?

What are you still carrying around that you’d quite happily put down?

We all have things we hang onto for longer than we need to. Worries, things that have happened, things we wish we’d done differently, or even just thoughts that keep popping back up when we’d rather they didn’t.

So, while we’re surrounded by pumpkins, candles and a little Halloween magic, have a think…

What do you want to take with you into the next season, and what would you quite like to leave here?

If something came to mind as you read that, and you’d like some help with it, send me a message. We can have a chat about what’s going on and how I might be able to help.

I called it Serene Mind Solutions for a reason.

When I was trying to decide what to call my business, I kept coming back to the word serene.

It summed up so much of what I wanted for the women I work with.

To feel calmer in themselves. To trust their own decisions. To have the headspace to think clearly and actually be present for what’s happening in their lives.

Not some permanently peaceful existence where nothing ever gets on your nerves and life always goes to plan. I don’t think any of us are achieving that!

I mean the everyday kind of serenity.

Being able to deal with something and carry on with your day. Making a decision and feeling happy with it. Sitting having coffee with someone you love and actually being there with them, rather than having your mind somewhere else entirely.

Having more of you available for your own life.

That was what I wanted Serene Mind Solutions to be about when I chose the name, and it still is.

Helping women feel calm, think clearly and live confidently.

Have you ever had that moment when you suddenly realise you haven’t thought about something all day?

Something that, not so long ago, would have been popping into your head constantly.

You might have worried about what was going to happen, gone backwards and forwards over a decision you’d made, or replayed a conversation wondering whether you’d said the wrong thing.

Then one day, you get to the evening and realise you haven’t done any of it.

You’ve been busy getting on with your day and that thing that would normally have taken up so much space in your head just… didn’t.

I think that’s one of the loveliest ways to realise something has changed.

It doesn’t always come with a huge “wow, I feel completely different!” moment. Quite often, you notice it afterwards.

A client will tell me about something that’s happened and say, “Normally that would have really bothered me.”

Except this time it didn’t.

They dealt with it and carried on with their day. Or they made a decision without questioning it afterwards. They did something they’d been avoiding and it wasn’t nearly as difficult as they’d expected it to be.

That’s what this image makes me think about.

Getting on with your day without worrying about everything. Trusting yourself when you make a decision. Having more energy left for the things you actually want to do.

When you’ve spent a long time worrying, second-guessing yourself or feeling drained by it all, that can feel very different.

Sometimes you don’t realise just how different until you suddenly think...

Hang on. I haven’t worried about that today.
