Pilates
Taught By Lucy Scott
Pilates is essentially a mind body centering technique that emphasises the importance of beginning movement from a central core of stability. From this central core, the Pilates method woks by adjusting the intensity of each exercise through the use of differing limb movements and resistance (using pilates equipment). Lucy previously worked in the NHS for 13 years as an Occupational Therapist, many of those years as a Macmillan Occupational Therapist. She then retrained as a Pilates instructor with the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute. Lucy's previous career has given her a good understanding of the human body, and mind. Through her previous career Lucy developed excellent skills in observation which she now applies in her Pilates teaching to ensure all my clients are getting the most from the classes.

In every Pilates class, I make small adjustments to my clients’ positions, help them activate the right muscles, cue their movements and demonstrate exercises.

My real hope and aim is that, in my classes, you feel seen, supported and comfortable.

Why does Pilates feel so different from other forms of exercise? 🤔

I was chatting about this with a lady who came for her fourth one-to-one session recently, and it got me thinking about what makes Pilates different.

Here are a couple of things that spring to mind.

🌿 The movements are slow and controlled.

Our brains often associate exercise with speed, getting out of breath and pushing ourselves harder. Pilates challenges that idea. We slow things down, focus on the quality of the movement and pay attention to how we’re moving, rather than how quickly we can do it.

🌿 We learn to pay attention to what we feel in our bodies.

Are we in the right position? Can we feel the muscles working? Are we holding tension somewhere we don’t need to?

This might sound simple, but it’s actually quite different from how many of us go about our everyday lives.

Think about having a headache but still having a mountain of work to do. You might ignore the pain, carry on regardless and push through because there are things that need to get done.

We’re often very good at ignoring what our bodies are telling us!

Pilates gives us the opportunity to pause, notice what’s happening and respond to those sensations rather than automatically pushing through.

It’s not just about strengthening our muscles. It’s also about developing a better awareness of our bodies and learning to move with more control and intention.

And perhaps that’s one of the most valuable things we take away from Pilates — not just how we move during a class, but how we listen to our bodies in everyday life.

Have you noticed that Pilates feels different from other exercise you’ve tried?

Small movements create big changes.

Pilates isn’t always about making a movement bigger or doing more repetitions.

Sometimes, the smallest movement can be the most challenging.

In Pilates, we use small, controlled movements with precision and awareness — paying attention to where our body is positioned, which muscles are working and how we are moving.

That might mean moving your leg just a few centimetres, making a tiny adjustment to your pelvis, or slowing an exercise right down.

These small changes can create a much more focused intensity.

Rather than simply moving through an exercise, you’re really concentrating on how you are moving and where you can feel the work.

And that’s one of the things I love about Pilates. You don’t need to make every movement bigger, faster or harder to make it effective.

Sometimes, less movement and more awareness is where the magic happens. ✨
