💙 Harriet’s story shows the power of patience, understanding and the right support.

When Harriet first joined Huntingdon Day Opportunities, she often sat alone and found it difficult to communicate her wishes. With time, patience and a team committed to understanding her needs, everything began to change.

Today, Harriet enjoys a range of activities, has formed friendships and grown in confidence. One of her favourite outings is visiting Costa, where she proudly orders her own hot chocolate! ☕💙

Her journey is a wonderful reminder of how the right support can help people build independence, make choices and feel truly included.

A huge thank you to Grace and Fiona from the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme at Addenbrooke’s Hospital for visiting our customers and delivering an informative and accessible session about bowel cancer screening.
Customers learnt about the bowel, how to recognise potential problems and the signs and symptoms to look out for. Using pictures and a model of the bowel, Grace and Fiona explained how bowel cancer screening works and demonstrated how to use the bowel cancer screening kit, helping customers feel more informed and confident about taking care of their health.
Claire said: “I will be getting my kit in a few years’ time, and I will definitely be doing it. I might not have known what to do with it before we had this talk.” Val also shared that she found the talk “really interesting and informative”.
Sessions like this are so important in making health information accessible, helping people feel confident to ask questions and supporting them to make informed decisions about their own health and wellbeing.

🍗👩‍🍳 Forget the kettlebell workout - our Basildon customers had a “Cooked Chicken Workout!” 😂💪

The cooking session was all about teamwork, hard work, and having fun together! 🥗🍽️

There was plenty of laughter, teamwork, and a little bit of hard work along the way, but the best part was sitting down together to enjoy the delicious lunch we had prepared. ❤️

Who needs a gym when you have a kitchen full of energy, laughter, and freshly cooked chicken? 😂🍗

Our Basildon customers have been working together to develop their shopping and budgeting life skills, both in our very own Papworth Shop and out in a large supermarket! 🛍️

They’ve been learning how to plan, compare prices, make choices and stick to a budget. They soon discovered that budgeting for lunchtime meals can be a little trickier than they first thought! 🥪🥗

A fantastic opportunity to build confidence, teamwork, independence, and valuable everyday life skills. Well done, everyone, for working together and giving it a go!

💆‍♀️✨ A small group of our Basildon customers took part in an ACL college course, where they had the opportunity to learn new skills in nail painting, and hand/ arm massages!

It's lovely to see how trying new things can open up new opportunities, as one of our customers enjoyed the experience so much that they have since returned to college outside of the centre to study a beauty-based course! 🌸

Experiences like these help build confidence, develop practical skills and encourage our customers to explore their interests and work towards new goals. ❤️

🎃📚 Our Basildon customers have been getting into the spooky spirit with a trip to the local library!

To keep with the Halloween theme, everyone chose a spooky or Halloween-themed book that caught their interest. They then spent time reading as much as they could before sharing what they had read or learnt with each other. 👻📖

Activities like these help develop reading skills, memory skills and build communication skills.🧡🕷️

🐮🎨 Our Basildon customers got creative making their very own paper plate Highland cows!
Using written instructions, everyone worked through the steps to create their cows, practising their ability to follow instructions while getting creative with different materials. ✂️🤎
Activities like these help develop fine motor skills, concentration, reading and comprehension, and independence, while encouraging creativity and building confidence through hands-on learning. 🧡🐮
