There’s something really beautiful about collaborating with others, especially when you get to witness how much you’ve grown.
Yemaya and I trained in sound healing at the same time with Hoppi Wimbush Back then, I wouldn’t use my voice. Like so many women, I carried what I would describe as a throat block, a witch wound, a fear of being heard. I remember refusing to sing at school, and I absolutely hated the voice module during our sound healing training!
Our voice is perhaps the most powerful instrument we have, yet for so many of us, it’s the one we’re most afraid to use. Our relationship with our voice is so deeply connected to our confidence, our self-expression and how comfortable we feel taking up space in the world.
So it felt particularly special to sing alongside Yemaya during our recent collaboration, weaving Welsh song with traditional icaros. Yemaya holds such a beautiful, safe energy that I felt completely comfortable exploring my voice alongside hers. No pressure to perform, no expectation to sound a certain way, just two women sharing sound.
And perhaps that's one of the greatest gifts of collaboration. Sometimes another person creates the space in which we feel safe enough to explore parts of ourselves we've kept quiet for years.
The song I'm singing is Cân y Gwynt, a Welsh poem about the spirit of air, melody by I highly recommend exploring her beautiful collection of Welsh chants and songs. 🌬️
And in the spirit of practising what I preach, this is actually the first time I've ever shared a recording of myself singing publicly. Am I comfortable with that? Absolutely fu***ng not. 😂 Every part of me wants to delete this video and pretend it never happened.
But there's something to be said for deliberately making ourselves uncomfortable. For doing the things that scare us a little, challenging the stories we've told ourselves and discovering that perhaps we're more capable than we think.
So here's me, taking my own advice, using my voice and resisting the overwhelming urge to throw my phone into the nearest hedge. 🌿😂
