When stress doesn’t switch off: fight, flight and shutdown
Stress is a normal part of life. When something feels threatening or overwhelming, our nervous system responds to help us cope. We might feel anxious, tense, restless or ready to act — often called fight or flight.
Usually, when the challenge passes, our system settles. Our breathing eases, muscles relax and we gradually return to a sense of safety.
But what happens when stress continues, with little time to recover?
We may remain on high alert, experiencing:
• Anxiety or feeling constantly on edge
• Muscle tension, headaches or digestive problems
• Poor sleep, irritability or difficulty switching off
Sometimes, prolonged stress can also be accompanied by a different response: freeze or shutdown.
Rather than feeling wired, we might feel:
• Numb, flat or disconnected
• Exhausted or lacking energy
• Foggy-headed or unable to concentrate
• Withdrawn, with everyday tasks feeling overwhelming
We can move between these responses, and everyone's experience is different.
Persistent stress can affect more than our emotions. It can influence sleep, digestion, energy, concentration and how we experience pain. Sometimes, symptoms increase our stress, which in turn makes symptoms harder to manage.
🌿 These responses aren't a personal failing. Your nervous system is trying to protect you, even when its responses no longer feel helpful.
The aim isn't to force yourself to relax or simply push through. It's to gradually create more opportunities for safety, support and recovery.
At Osteopathy For All, we recognise the connections between stress, the nervous system and physical symptoms. Alongside hands-on osteopathy, we offer specialist mind-body pain recovery support.
