Yes or No with Dr Jane 👩‍⚕️

Cortisol cocktails?
Sleepmaxxing?
Mouth taping?
Detox teas?
“Balancing” your hormones?
Cutting out carbs?

There is a lot of health advice online, and not all of it needs to become part of your routine.

In this series, I’m giving a quick yes, no or “it depends” to some of the trends I keep seeing online — and explaining what actually matters.

Because health advice should be useful, evidence-based and realistic, not another list of things you feel you should be doing.

What should I cover next?

Welcome to sleepmaxxing 😴

Mouth tape. Magnesium. Sleep trackers. Special lights. Complicated bedtime routines.

There seems to be a new “sleep hack” every week.

And while some things may genuinely help, better sleep doesn’t have to become another full-time job.

For most people, the basics still matter most:

a fairly regular sleep and wake time
enough opportunity to sleep
less caffeine later in the day
a darker, cooler bedroom
winding down before bed
managing stress where you can

You don’t need to optimise every minute of your night to support your health.

And if poor sleep is affecting your energy, mood, cravings or overall wellbeing, it’s worth looking at the bigger picture rather than simply adding more sleep gadgets.

If you want support improving sleep and other lifestyle habits in a way that actually fits your life, I also offer 1:1 health coaching.

What happens when you stop GLP-1 medication?

One of the biggest worries people have is whether the weight will simply come back when they stop.

For many people, appetite and hunger signals can increase again once the medication is stopped, and some weight regain can happen. That doesn’t mean the treatment has “failed”.

It does mean that the habits and support around the medication matter too.

Things like:

eating enough protein
protecting muscle with strength training
building regular eating patterns
managing sleep and stress
having realistic habits you can maintain long term

GLP-1 medication can be a useful tool, but it works best as part of a wider plan for your health.

And if you are thinking about stopping, changing dose or managing side effects, speak to the clinician who prescribed it rather than making changes on your own.

If you’re using GLP-1 medication and want support with the lifestyle side alongside it, I also offer 1:1 health coaching.

Did you catch me on BBC Reporting Scotland? 📺

I was so pleased to join the BBC to talk about weight loss jabs: what they can and can’t do, and why the support around them matters just as much as the treatment itself.

As a GP and health coach, I see every day that lasting change comes from the habits you build alongside any treatment: how you eat, sleep, move and look after yourself.

A huge thank you to Sabriena for so openly sharing her story, and to the BBC Reporting Scotland team for covering such an important topic. 💜

Health advice has to move beyond “eat less, move more” and relying on willpower alone.

Because our health behaviours don’t happen in isolation.

Sleep, stress, hormones, work, family life, habits, our environment and how much headspace we have can all influence the choices we make.

That doesn’t mean calories or movement don’t matter.

It means that simply knowing what to do is not always enough to make change happen.

This is one of the reasons I became so passionate about health coaching alongside being a GP - helping people look at the bigger picture and find changes that can actually work in real life.

If you feel like you know what you “should” be doing but are struggling to make it work in practice, I also offer 1:1 health coaching.

I’m a GP, and here’s what I took away from Glasgow’s largest menopause event 👇

I spent World Menopause Day at the sold-out Scottish ‘Pause Summit, sharing my own story and sitting on the medical expert panel. These are the things that stayed with me:

1️⃣ You are not alone. A whole room of women were asking the same questions you might be asking yourself.

2️⃣ Prepare for your appointment. Write down your symptoms, how long you’ve had them, how they’re affecting your life, and the questions you want answered. It makes such a difference to the conversation with your doctor.

3️⃣ Menopause can affect ADHD. ’s talk was eye-opening, and I came home with a signed copy of her book!

4️⃣ Laughter and movement matter too. had the whole room on its feet, and had us in stitches.

Thank you to for organising such a special day, and to my fellow panellists and Kate Stock .change.health. Thanks also to .jenwilson for her Love Your Lymph workshop 💜

📌 Save this for your next GP appointment, and share it with a friend who needs it.

Supermarket Series: UPF swaps — dairy edition 🛒
⁣
Ultra-processed foods can make up a bigger part of our diet than we realise, and sometimes the simplest place to start is just becoming more aware of what we are buying.
⁣
In this video, I’m looking at some everyday dairy products and showing you a few simple swaps you might want to consider.
⁣
This is not about labelling foods as “good” or “bad”.
⁣
It is about reading the ingredients, understanding what is in the products you use regularly, and making informed choices where it feels realistic.
⁣
You do not need to overhaul your whole shopping trolley.
⁣
Small swaps, made consistently, can add up over time.

How I spent World Menopause Day 💜

Glasgow, a sold-out room, and a day full of honest conversations at the Scottish ‘Pause Summit.

I shared my own story of navigating women’s health care in the NHS, which was challenging even as a doctor. I also joined the medical expert panel for an audience Q&A with , and Kate Stock .change.health.

There were plenty of laughs along the way too, thanks to , and .jenwilson.

Thank you, , for bringing so many brilliant women together. No one should go through menopause feeling alone.

Most of us already know the basics.

Eat well. Move more. Get enough sleep. Manage stress.

But knowing what to do and actually being able to do it consistently are two very different things.

That’s often where people get stuck — not because they need more information, but because the plan doesn’t work with their real life.

A small change you can repeat on a busy, stressful week will usually take you further than the “perfect” routine you manage for three days.

So instead of asking, “What else should I be doing?”, try asking:

“What’s one small thing I could realistically do more consistently?”

That’s where lasting change starts.

Did you hear me on BBC Radio Scotland?! 📻✨ Or perhaps you spotted me on Reporting Scotland's evening news! 📺

A little pinch-me moment this week! I was featured on BBC Radio Scotland, appeared on BBC Reporting Scotland and contributed to a BBC Scotland article discussing access to weight loss injections in Scotland.

As both an NHS GP and a health coach, this is a topic I feel quite strongly about.

One of the things I wanted to highlight is something I talk about with my clients all the time. Weight management is complex, and whilst medication can be really helpful for some people, it's not the whole picture.

Sleep, stress, work-life balance, relationships and our everyday habits all have an impact on our health. It's so important that we look at the whole person rather than just focusing on weight or medication alone.

I'd love to know what you think. Have you been following the discussions around weight loss injections in Scotland?

Have a read and let me know your thoughts! 👇
