THE POWER OF LANGUAGE.
Language is a powerful thing.
The meaning we attach to words. The impact they have on ourselves and others. The stories we begin to believe because of the language we hear.
Words can hurt. And some words are incredibly difficult to unhear, particularly when they’ve been spoken to you for much of your life.
“You’re stupid.”
“You can’t do that.”
“You’re not good enough.”
“You haven’t got a clue.”
Hear something often enough, and you may begin to believe it.
And before you know it, someone else’s words have become your own internal narrative.
You stop trying.
You stop believing.
You stop being curious.
You stop exploring what you want and how you actually want to live.
Not necessarily because you aren’t capable, but because you’ve spent years telling yourself you aren’t.
COACHING TIP 🌿
Start becoming more aware of language.
Pay attention to the words others use towards you.
Notice the language you use when speaking to yourself.
And perhaps most importantly, become curious about the language you use towards others.
Are your words encouraging or limiting?
Are they kind or critical?
Are they even yours, or are you repeating something you’ve heard your whole life?
It’s a simple exercise, but it can be incredibly revealing.
Just because you’ve heard something your whole life doesn’t make it true.
Get curious. Challenge the narrative.
