IT’S TIME FOR CHANGE IN THE AESTHETICS INDUSTRY.
And as someone who has worked in aesthetics for over a decade, I welcome it.
Yesterday, the Government announced proposals for tighter regulation of high-risk cosmetic procedures in England, alongside its commitment to introducing licensing for other aesthetic treatments.
In my opinion, this is long overdue.
Working as an NHS anaesthetic practitioner alongside running Costhetics, I understand the importance of clinical knowledge, safe practice and recognising complications.
What concerns me is how normalised invasive aesthetic treatments have become, sometimes without enough consideration being given to the qualifications, training or experience of the person performing them.
A weekend course should never be a substitute for a proper understanding of anatomy, complications and patient safety.
There are some fantastic practitioners in this industry, both medical and non-medical, who take their responsibilities seriously. But we need consistent, enforceable standards that protect the public.
I welcome the proposed changes and look forward to seeing meaningful regulation introduced.
Because ultimately, this isn’t about protecting businesses or restricting choice.
It’s about protecting patients.
And that should always come first.
