Why Is It So Hard to Find a Specialist Therapist for Childhood Apraxia of Speech?

When I was a child, I thought speech and language therapists just dealt with speech. I didn't realise they worked in so many different areas, from language and swallowing to newborns, tracheostomy care and palliative care.

Speech and language therapy is a relatively small profession, and most therapists specialise in particular areas. Even among those working with speech sound disorders, very few specialise in childhood apraxia of speech (CAS).

CAS requires additional specialist training, which can be expensive and difficult to access. NHS training budgets are limited, and therapists are not always able to undertake this training.

This is why Speech Apraxia International works to provide affordable or free specialist training.

Unfortunately, finding a therapist with CAS expertise can be like finding a needle in a haystack, and those available are often booked weeks in advance.

Week-long Intensives for Childhood Apraxia of Speech

For children with CAS, frequent, specialist speech therapy can make a real difference. Yet finding a therapist with the appropriate training and availability can be incredibly difficult.

Intensive therapy programs, often delivered over four or five days, provide children with repeated opportunities to practice speech movements, consolidate emerging skills, and build on progress from one session to the next. They are generally more well known in the USA but found less in Europe. They are certainly not offered by the NHS (although there is a strong argument that they should be).

Intensive programs can also be particularly helpful for families who travel long distances to access specialist services and provide focused time for a really great assessment and some dynamic treatment. I offer them at my own clinic, Lancashire Speech Therapy, but due to high demand, parents often have to schedule for several weeks in advance.

However, intensive therapy isn't a quick fix. It can be a valuable opportunity to establish and develop speech skills, but work still needs to continue once children return to their home community. It can also be tiring for everyone to work at this intensity, and you may have to factor in the costs of accommodation. However, with a therapist focusing on your child and working intensively, it can be a really effective approach.

For children with CAS, frequent, specialist speech therapy can make a real difference. Yet finding a therapist with the appropriate training and availability can be incredibly difficult.

Great post by Hazel Shaw Independent Speech and Language Therapist

I saw this quote today and it really resonated with me, as it reminded me of the work I did with a lovely little girl who is a Gestalt Language Processor (GLP). ❤️

Traditional approaches to teaching language just weren't working for her.

But rather than expecting her to change the way she learns, we changed the way we supported her learning. And she is absolutely flying! 🥰

I regularly receive video updates of her progress and I just love seeing how much she is thriving.

Learning about Gestalt Language Processing, understanding how she processes language differently and adapting our approach accordingly has been absolutely pivotal.

It's such a pleasure to see what can happen when we truly understand a child's individual way of learning and work with it, rather than against it. ❤️

Sometimes it's not the child who needs to change. It's our approach.

If we are serious about helping people with speech apraxia speak after a stroke, we need to fund rehabilitation.

Speech therapists warn of serious shortcomings in rehabilitation after stroke and demand to be integrated into healthcare

The Council of Speech Therapists warns of inequalities in rehabilitation after stroke and calls for more resources, clear protocols, and continuous speech therapy care.

Supporting Other Organisations – Our Charity of the year Mikey's Wish Foundation

You may not realise that at Speech Apraxia International, we are committed not only to our own work but also to supporting other organisations that share our aims of providing information, support and advocacy for individuals with speech, language and communication difficulties.

One of the ways we do this is through our Charity of the Year initiative.Last year, our chosen charity was the Rare Dementia Support, recognising its important work supporting people affected by primary, progressive apraxia of speech.

This year, we have been delighted to support Mike's Wish Foundation, an organisation doing fantastic work to advocating for others with speech, language, and communication needs especially childhood apraxia of speech (CAS).

Throughout the year, we have tried to support Mike's Wish Foundation in whatever ways we can. This has included promoting their activities, featuring their products on our website, sharing their work with our international community and helping to raise awareness of their important mission.

As Christmas approaches, many of us begin thinking about charitable giving and how we might make a difference.
If you are considering making a donation this Christmas, we would encourage you to consider Mike's Wish Foundation.
Every contribution, however small, can help an organisation like this continue its valuable work.

At Speech Apraxia International, we firmly believe that organisations working in our field should support one another, rather than compete. We share a common goal: improving understanding, increasing awareness, and ensuring that individuals with speech apraxia and their families receive the recognition and support they deserve.
Please consider supporting Mike's Wish Foundation this Christmas.
