Building Trust with an Autistic Person: Why Consistency, Patience and Understanding Matter
Trust is at the heart of good care. For an autistic person, building trust can take time, but consistency, patience and understanding can make all the difference.
Noise, bright lights, unexpected changes and unclear communication can sometimes feel overwhelming. Having someone new in the home can add to that uncertainty. It's not unwillingness to engage; it's about feeling safe and understood.
Knowing what to expect can help reduce anxiety. Having the same carer, or a small familiar team, keeping visits at regular times and giving advance notice of changes can all help someone feel more comfortable. Familiar routines around meals and personal care can also make everyday life easier.
Patience is just as important. Trust cannot be rushed, and not everyone will feel ready to talk or engage straight away. Allowing time to process questions, respecting the need for space and appreciating small steps, such as sharing a cup of tea, can make a real difference. Sometimes simply being nearby, calm and reassuring is enough.
Every autistic person is different. Understanding their sensory preferences, how they communicate, what interests them and what helps them feel calm is essential. Clear explanations and knowing what to expect can make daily interactions much more comfortable.
Above all, an autistic person should be involved in decisions about their own care. Their preferences and choices matter. Good support means working with the person, listening to them and respecting what makes them feel comfortable.
At New Age Care, we take time to get to know each person and understand what matters to them. We aim to provide consistent, personal support, with familiar faces and routines wherever possible.
If you're considering care for someone you love, we'd be happy to talk, listen and help you explore the right support, with no pressure.
