The physio becomes the patient… again. 👀⚽

Last week, Kevin from Kinetic Intelligence came to Regain for some hands-on treatment. This week, Matthew headed over to see Kevin and experience his approach for himself.

After getting back into playing football, Matthew knew there were a few areas that weren’t quite working as well as he’d like.

Over two hours, Kevin looked at his movement and identified areas to work on, particularly ankle flexion, ankle stability and how this was feeding into movement through the hips.

There was plenty of testing, treatment and exercises, followed by retesting to see how Matthew’s body responded.

His verdict?

Quite painful at times 😂 but a noticeable difference afterwards. Feeling more balanced, moving better and already seeing changes in the tests they initially carried out.

This is exactly why we’re excited about the relationship developing between Regain and Kinetic Intelligence. Two different approaches, two practitioners learning from each other and ultimately another option when a client could benefit from a different type of support.

And Matthew isn’t finished yet. He’ll be heading back for another session and bringing you along for the journey.

Watch this space. 👀

One leg moving freely. The other? Not quite. 👀

Continuing our work with Nikki, Matthew noticed a clear difference between how her left and right legs were moving.

Her left leg felt loose and moved comfortably, while the right side was much more restricted, particularly along the outside of the thigh.

In this session, Matthew works through the lateral line and quad muscles, including the vastus lateralis and re**us femoris, where there was noticeable tightness.

Using gentle compression and heat around the knee and surrounding tissues, the aim is to help the area soften, settle the nervous system and encourage easier movement through the leg.

It’s another example of why we don’t just focus on where you feel pain. Looking at how the body moves side to side can give us useful information about what may be contributing to your symptoms.

When two practitioners realise their journeys into pain and movement are remarkably similar…

It was great to welcome Kevin Pratt, founder of Kinetic Intelligence, into Regain for some hands-on treatment.

Kevin is a manual and movement therapist, but what really stood out was how closely his own journey mirrors Matthew’s.

Both experienced years of persistent pain. Both went through surgery and rehabilitation without finding the answers they were looking for. And both eventually discovered different approaches to understanding movement, the body and the factors contributing to pain.

Kevin had previously been told after surgery that he wouldn't run again. Since then, he has returned to training, boxing and jiu-jitsu and has even completed a 4:46 mile.

Despite being a practitioner himself, there are still areas of the body you simply can't effectively work on yourself, which is what brought Kevin to Regain. Following the session, he experienced improved movement and reduced discomfort.

The best part? This isn't going to be a one-off.

Matthew has also been to experience Kevin's approach at Kinetic Intelligence, and the two are now looking at working collaboratively referring clients to one another where their different skill sets could complement the support that person needs.

Because good treatment isn't about pretending one practitioner can do everything. Sometimes the best thing you can do for a client is know who else can help.

Some of the best connections are the ones that last well beyond the first appointment. ⚽

We’ve known Eray Altinoluk, Head Team Coach at Headingley AFC, for around five or six years now, after he first brought his son to Regain for help with some issues he was experiencing while playing football.

Since then, we’ve stayed in touch and built a great relationship through our shared involvement in the local football community.

Over the years, Eray has trusted Matthew with players who need support with injuries, recovery and getting back to playing, and we’re always happy to help where we can.

With Regain now also sponsoring a Headingley AFC player this season, it’s great to see that relationship continue to grow.

A big thank you to Eray for the continued support, recommendations and trust in Regain over the years. It means a lot to have local coaches who value what we do and continue to send their players our way.

Here’s to plenty more football (and hopefully fewer injuries!) ahead. ⚽

Football has always been more than just a sport for Matthew. ⚽

It’s been a huge part of both his personal life and his career.

Alongside his work at Regain, Matthew has had the opportunity to work within the Manchester City Academy, supporting and coaching young players in an elite football environment.

For someone who genuinely loves the game, being involved in football at this level is something he’s incredibly proud of but the experience also feeds directly back into the work we do at Regain.

Working around athletes gives you a real understanding of the demands sport puts on the body, the importance of good movement and recovery, and just how frustrating an injury can be when all you want to do is get back on the pitch.

It’s why sport continues to be such a big part of Regain today, whether Matthew is working within an academy environment, supporting local football, or helping someone in the clinic get back to playing at the weekend.

Different levels. Same goal: keeping people doing the sport they love.

And for Matthew, football will always be a big part of that. ⚽

What can two sets of scales tell us about the way your body is moving? 👀

When Nikki first came to Regain, she was placing around 7kg more weight through her left leg than her right.

After working with her over the past few weeks, that difference is now around 3kg.

For Nikki, improving that weight distribution has gone alongside a reduction in the tightness she was experiencing down the right side of her leg.

It’s a really simple assessment, but it can give us useful information about how someone is standing, loading their body and whether they may be favouring one side.

Sometimes what feels “straight” or balanced to you isn’t quite what your body is actually doing.

Arthritis doesn’t automatically mean you need to stop moving.

This World Arthritis Day, we want to challenge the idea that experiencing joint pain means avoiding activity altogether.

For many people living with arthritis, appropriate movement and exercise can play an important role in maintaining strength, mobility and everyday function. The important part is finding what works for you and your body.

If pain or stiffness is making you nervous about moving, exercising or returning to activities you enjoy, professional guidance can help you understand what may be appropriate for you.

We assess the individual rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, helping you understand your movement and work towards staying as active as possible.

Don't simply assume that arthritis means giving up the things you enjoy.
