Tonight is Bonfire Night, and one of the busiest evenings of the year for burns in UK A&E departments. Most of these injuries, from fireworks, sparklers and bonfires, are preventable.
Three reminders worth sharing:
Choose organised displays where possible. At home, use fireworks from reputable retailers, follow the distances on the packaging, and never return to a lit firework.
Sparklers burn extremely hot. They are not suitable for children under five and should go straight into a bucket of water once finished.
If someone is burned, cool the burn under running water for 20 minutes. No ice, butter or creams. For large, deep or facial burns, call 999 or go to A&E.
Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable Bonfire Night.
