💙 November is Men’s Health Awareness Month.

And it’s an important reminder that looking after our health isn’t always something we find easy to talk about.
For many men, there’s still an expectation to be strong, carry on and deal with things quietly.
But health isn’t just about physical fitness. It’s about mental wellbeing, emotional health, recognising changes in our bodies and feeling comfortable enough to ask for help.
Men’s Health Awareness Month encourages conversations about important issues, including prostate and testicular cancer, mental health and su***de prevention.
It’s also an opportunity to challenge the idea that seeking support is a sign of weakness.
Sometimes that means booking a health check, speaking to a GP, having an honest conversation with someone close or seeking professional support when life feels difficult.

At The Upminster Sanctuary, we believe everyone deserves to feel listened to, respected and supported. Our counselling, complementary therapies and wellbeing classes offer different opportunities to make time for yourself.

This November, let’s make men’s health something we talk about openly.

🌿 The ancient tradition of walking barefoot.

Long before shoes became part of everyday life, our ancestors walked barefoot across grass, soil, sand and stone.
And while footwear has given us protection and comfort, there’s something rather wonderful about the simple experience of feeling the ground beneath our feet.
Our feet contain thousands of sensory nerve endings, helping us detect changes in texture, pressure and temperature.
Walking barefoot on different surfaces gives these sensory receptors a variety of information, helping our bodies respond to the ground beneath us.
Across different cultures, barefoot walking has also held symbolic meaning, associated with humility, respect, spirituality and a connection to nature.
Today, some people enjoy walking barefoot through the garden or across a sandy beach, simply for the pleasure of experiencing those different sensations.
And perhaps that’s part of what makes it so special. Something our ancestors did out of necessity has become something we can appreciate for the experience itself.

At The Upminster Sanctuary, we understand the importance of caring for our feet, which carry us through so much of everyday life.
Our reflexology treatments offer a different way to give them some attention, drawing on traditional practices involving gentle pressure applied to specific areas of the feet.

For thousands of years, humans have created gardens. Not simply to grow food, but to cultivate medicinal plants, celebrate nature, find beauty and create places for quiet contemplation.
From the enclosed gardens of medieval monasteries to the peaceful courtyards of ancient cultures, gardens have long been places where people feel connected to something beyond everyday life.

And that tradition is very much alive at The Upminster Sanctuary.
Our gardens have been lovingly cultivated and cared for over decades, beginning with our founder, Julia, whose vision was to create a haven for people, plants and wildlife alike.
They’re not simply there to look beautiful.
Our gardens are part of Sanctuary life, providing space for outdoor yoga, gatherings, relaxation and reflection. We have an Apothecary Garden celebrating the connection between plants and traditional herbal knowledge, and our labyrinth offers a winding path for quiet contemplation.
Every season brings something different, and the gardens continue to grow and evolve with us.

Because sometimes, caring for a place is also a way of caring for the people who visit it.

Next time you visit The Upminster Sanctuary, take a little time to enjoy the gardens. They’re every bit as much a part of who we are as the treatments and classes inside.

🌿 There is beauty in imperfection.
In Japan, there’s a traditional aesthetic philosophy known as Wabi-Sabi, which finds beauty in simplicity, imperfection and the passing of time.
It’s the character of an old wooden table, the uneven shape of a handmade bowl, or the weathered surface of a stone that’s spent years in the garden.
Rather than seeing these things as flaws, Wabi-Sabi encourages us to appreciate the stories they tell.
Wabi is associated with simplicity and understated beauty, while Sabi reflects the character and beauty that come with age and the passage of time.
Together, they offer a different way of looking at the world.
One where things don’t have to be polished, symmetrical or brand new to be appreciated.
And perhaps there’s something we can take from that in our own lives.
The lines on our faces, the changes we’ve experienced, the little imperfections that make us who we are.
Life isn’t always perfectly arranged, and there’s beauty in that too.

🪷 Why is the lotus flower such an important symbol in yoga?
You’ve probably seen the lotus flower associated with yoga, meditation and spiritual wellbeing. But its meaning goes far beyond its beauty.
For thousands of years, the lotus has held a sacred place in Hindu and Buddhist traditions, symbolising purity, wisdom and spiritual awakening.
And much of that meaning comes from how it grows.

Rooted in mud beneath the water, the lotus rises towards the surface before opening into a beautiful flower.
This journey has become a symbol of personal growth and spiritual awakening. Despite its muddy beginnings, the flower emerges beautifully above the water.
In yoga philosophy, the lotus represents spiritual development, awareness and inner balance.
It’s also the inspiration behind Padmasana, or Lotus Pose, one of yoga’s most recognisable seated meditation positions.

You’ll also find the lotus in traditional chakra imagery, with different numbers of petals representing different energy centres.

So the next time you see a lotus flower associated with yoga, remember that it’s much more than a pretty symbol.
It’s a reminder that something beautiful can grow from the most unlikely beginnings. 🪷

At The Upminster Sanctuary, we love exploring the traditions behind practices such as yoga and meditation.

🌿 The gentle art of Qigong

For thousands of years, people in China have practised Qigong, a traditional practice that brings together gentle movement, breathing and focused attention.
Unlike more energetic forms of exercise, Qigong uses slow, flowing movements, often inspired by the natural world. Movements are performed with awareness, encouraging balance, coordination and a sense of calm.
In traditional Chinese philosophy, Qi refers to vital energy, while Gong describes skill developed through practice. Together, Qigong is often understood as the cultivation of energy through mindful movement.

One of the lovely things about Qigong is its accessibility. Many movements can be adapted to different ages, abilities and levels of mobility.

At The Upminster Sanctuary, Qigong offers an opportunity to explore this ancient tradition in a welcoming environment, with guidance and encouragement along the way.
Whether you’re completely new to the practice or looking to continue your journey, we’d love to welcome you.

🌿 Get in touch with The Upminster Sanctuary to find out more about our Qigong classes and how to join.

Do you capture the moment, or live in it? 📸

Some people photograph everything.
Their morning coffee. The dog sleeping in a funny position. A beautiful sky. Dinner with friends. Flowers growing in the garden. The ordinary little moments that might not seem particularly special at the time.
Others barely take a photograph at all.
And then there are the bigger occasions. Weddings, birthdays, holidays, concerts, family celebrations and those once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Look around and you’ll see people experiencing the very same moment in completely different ways.
Some are reaching for their phones, taking photographs and videos, wanting to preserve every little detail.
Others don’t take a single picture. They’re watching, listening, laughing, taking everything in and trusting their memories to hold on to the experience.

Neither is necessarily right or wrong.
For some, photography is a way of noticing the beauty in everyday life. A photograph of something completely ordinary today might become incredibly precious in twenty years.
For others, being present means putting the phone away. They’d rather experience something without thinking about capturing it.
And perhaps the interesting question isn’t whether we should take photographs, but whether taking them changes the way we experience the moment itself.

At The Upminster Sanctuary, mindfulness is about awareness of the present moment, and that can look different for everybody.

Sometimes it’s noticing something beautiful enough to photograph. Sometimes it’s enjoying something so completely that taking a photograph never even crosses your mind.

So which are you?
📸 The person with thousands of photographs of absolutely everything?
🌿 Or the person who rarely takes a picture because you’re too busy enjoying what’s happening?

And have you ever wished you’d taken a photograph of a moment you can never get back?

🌿 Why did people hang herbs above their doors?
Long before air fresheners and scented candles, bundles of herbs could be found hanging above doorways, tucked into homes and tied together in little bunches.
But they weren’t always there just to smell lovely.

For centuries, plants have played an important part in folklore, spiritual beliefs and household traditions. Different herbs were associated with protection, good fortune, remembrance and cleansing.

🌿 Rosemary was associated with remembrance, loyalty and protection, and was used in traditional ceremonies and household customs.
đź’ś Lavender was valued for its fragrance and was traditionally used to scent homes, clothing and bedding.
🌱 Sage has a long history in herbal traditions and has been associated with wisdom, purification and protection in various cultures.
🌿 Thyme was associated with courage and strength in European folklore, while also being a familiar herb in the kitchen.
These traditions varied between regions, families and cultures, and many were passed down through generations.
There’s something fascinating about the way an ordinary plant growing in the garden could hold so much meaning.

At The Upminster Sanctuary, our connection with plants and traditional approaches to wellbeing continues through therapies such as herbal medicine and aromatherapy.

Do you have any herbs hanging in your home, or remember your parents or grandparents using them for something other than cooking? 🌿
