Heart Valve Voice Our mission is to improve the diagnosis, treatment & management of heart valve disease by raising awareness and providing support. www.heartvalvevoice.com

Heart valve disease is a common and serious but highly treatable condition which impacts upon more than one million people over the age of 65 in the UK. The UK boasts many world-renowned experts in heart valve disease, but patients do not always get the treatment that they deserve. This may be caused by low public awareness of the symptoms of heart valve disease, meaning people sometimes assume that their symptoms are simply due to getting older. It may also be because GPs do not have sufficient consultation time to fully explore patient symptoms. Or it could be that in the UK heart valve disease is not being treated with the priority it deserves. Heart Valve Voice is an advocacy group formed by a partnership between patients and doctors with the aim of taking on the challenges surrounding heart valve disease diagnosis and treatment. We aim to act as a source of information and be a voice for those who suffer from heart valve disease. Since being founded in 2013, we have succeeded in putting heart valve disease on the agenda for patients, healthcare providers and national policy makers. By working for you and with you, we can transform the diagnosis, referral and treatment of heart valve disease in the UK and bring us in line with other European countries. We are delighted to be the official charity partner of the Devon Philharmonic Orchestra for a special performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 at Exeter Cathedral on Friday 13 November 2026 at 8pm.

This concert has a particularly meaningful connection to Heart Valve Voice. Composer Gustav Mahler was diagnosed with a damaged mitral valve in 1907. Four years later, he developed bacterial endocarditis and, as a result, died the same year.

The evening is also especially personal for our patient advocate Brian Moore, who has played principal trumpet with the orchestra for many years. Following his diagnosis of a severe mitral valve leak, Brian underwent mitral valve repair in April of this year and now shares his experience to help raise awareness.

Heart Valve Voice will be there to share information about heart valve disease, connect with the community and raise vital funds to support our work.

Join us for an unforgettable evening of music while helping raise awareness of heart valve disease! Find out more about the event here: https://heartvalvevoice.com/mahlers-sixth-symphony-at-exeter-cathedral/

Clive Brind's heart issue emerged unexpectedly, and he had to be blue-lighted to the hospital from a pre-Christmas gathering with friends. He was diagnosed with a heart condition, received a pacemaker, and was later told he had a leaking aortic valve, which he had replaced through a TAVI procedure.

“It was still a shock when I discovered I had a problem with my heart. There was no history in the family, and I had no real symptoms. We lived in a three-story house at that time, and I did find that after I climbed all those stairs I was ready for bed, but I thought that was nothing more than age,” said Clive. Today, at 78, he considers himself fortunate for his health, strong family support, and the joys of life. Today, Wil is attending BSEcho 2026 in Manchester. This year marks a special milestone for the British Society of Echocardiography as they host their 35th annual conference. This event provides a valuable platform to raise awareness of heart valve disease, highlight the importance of early detection and diagnosis, and share the work Heart Valve Voice is doing to ensure the patient voice remains at the heart of valve care.

Last Sunday, Travis Toll took on the Great Eastern Run and finished with his new personal best. So far, he has completed 5 half marathons and a 52.4 mile (85km) challenge. To finish off this year of challenges, he's taking on the 85-mile Norfolk Coastal Walk from Hopton to Hunstanton in November. If you would like to support Travis, you can read more about him and donate here: https://heartvalvevoice.com/travis-tolls-fundraising-challenges/

Travis is fundraising money in memory of his uncle James Clear, who sadly passed away from endocarditis in April 2025. You can read James’ story, written by his wife Sarah, here: https://heartvalvevoice.com/remembering-james-clear-his-story-with-endocarditis/
