🎙️ The Relational Thread

02/11/2026

Have you ever been so afraid of losing a relationship that you slowly lost connection with yourself?

Perhaps the question isn’t how to stop needing others. It’s whether we can love someone without leaving ourselves behind.

Dylan joins us on a tender question left by a dear listener:

“My best friend and I had a huge fight over something small. Should I reach out first or is it better to give them space?”

Dylan leaves us with a gentle reflection on love, self-worth and staying connected to yourself.

Every time we people-please, we fawn, we shutdown and self-censor, we are telling ourselves that we are not worthy of having core needs, that what we require to thrive doesn’t matter, that our inner voice isn’t as important as that of others.

We are always in relationship. With ourselves, with those around us, with the systems we collectively create and with Mother Earth.

Perhaps relationship (romantic or other) isn’t about not being triggered (because that’s where the good stuff of awareness lives).

Perhaps relationships hives us somewhere to notice:

Where do I disappear?
Where do I shut down?
Where do I become afraid?
And where can I begin to stay a little longer?
Both with myself and those around me.

In My Story, I explore the complexities of relating, and through my own journey I also explore what became a little obsession with emotional intelligence and relational intelligence. 🤓

There is a little moment in My Story that I’m rather glad I didn’t edit out.

I suddenly became worried that I had been speaking for too long. “Gee, I spoke for far too long. Will people hear me?”

And then I caught it.
My own fear of taking space.

Perhaps you know that feeling too. The urge to make yourself a little smaller, quieter or easier for others to accommodate.

What moved me was what came next. Instead of criticising myself, I heard: “It’s all right, darling. You can take space.”

I think this is such an important part of growth. The old fears may still visit us. What can change is how I meet myself when they arrive.

For me, creating safety within means making room for what arises with compassion. My vessel, my body, is my deepest source of wisdom, and I’m learning to listen.

Maybe taking up space doesn’t mean the fear disappears. Maybe I learn to meet the fear differently.

For a long time, being in a relationship meant being worthy to me.
Being chosen meant I was beautiful. Attractive. Lovable. Of value.

And when I look back with compassion, I can see why the possibility of losing a relationship could feel so frightening.

It wasn’t always only about losing the person.

What if I lost the feeling of being worthy too?

Perhaps you recognise something of yourself here. Maybe being wanted, needed or chosen has sometimes carried more weight than you realised.

I’m not interested in judging those parts of myself anymore. I’m much more interested in listening to them.
What was I asking another person to make me feel about myself? And what happens when I gently turn towards myself instead?

My vessel, my body, is my deepest source of wisdom. The more I learn to listen, the more I can begin creating safety within rather than asking another person to hold all that safety for me.

In My Story on The Relational Thread podcast, I share this part of my journey with you.

“I’m anxious.”
“I’m avoidant.”
“I’m just like this in relationships.”

I understand how comforting it can be to finally find language for something we have experienced for years. Sometimes a name helps us make sense of ourselves.

But what if that name doesn’t have to become who we are?

In My Story, I explore the idea of attachment stances rather than seeing attachment as a fixed identity.
I may feel anxious in one relationship, secure in another and something quite different elsewhere.
That opens up a gentler question for me.

Rather than “What attachment type am I?”, perhaps I can ask, “What happens to me in this relationship?”
What does my body tell me here? Where do I feel safe enough to soften? Where do I protect myself?

My vessel, my body, is my deepest source of wisdom.
I can listen to what arises rather than reducing myself to another label.

Perhaps there is freedom in remembering that a pattern is something I experience, not necessarily everything I am.

It can be quite easy to feel wonderfully “evolved” when nobody is triggering you.

😊 I can journal, do the practices, understand my patterns and feel beautifully grounded on my own.
And then someone gets close.

Suddenly, something I thought I had worked through comes bubbling back up. I might shut down, struggle to say what I need, or feel an old fear stirring in my body.

I used to wonder whether moments like these meant I hadn’t done enough work.
Now I’m curious about something else.
What if relationship gives me a mirror that being alone simply cannot? Perhaps the person in front of me isn’t only “triggering” something.

Perhaps my response is offering information too. My vessel, my body, is my deepest source of wisdom, and I can become curious about what it is showing me rather than rushing to judge or fix myself.

Sometimes the relationship isn’t interrupting the work. Sometimes the relationship is where the work becomes visible.

🤍 Wanting love and being able to receive love are not necessarily the same thing.

I used to think the pattern was that I kept finding avoidant partners.

Then I began to wonder, what if I was avoiding something too?

Not necessarily avoiding relationships. I wanted love deeply.

But perhaps there were parts of me that didn’t yet feel safe enough to fully receive it.
That was a tender realisation, because sometimes it’s easier to focus on why somebody else won’t come closer than to gently notice what happens within us when closeness becomes possible.

What happens in my body when someone comes close?
Do I soften into connection, or does something within me quietly brace?

I’m learning that our bodies can hold a wisdom that our thinking minds haven’t quite found the words for yet.

There’s no blame in any of this.
No ‘good’ person and no ‘bad’ person. Just curiosity about the relational dance we can find ourselves in, and the safety we may still be learning to create within.
Wanting love and having the space to receive it may not always be the same thing.

Last Sunday, October 11th, I took part in a beautiful event called Walk of Unity — a walk where many different faiths and no faiths altogether celebrated Unity, including local leaders such as different faith leaders, the local community, local MP and Sefton Mayor celebrated cohesion and connection through difference.

🥰 And oh my, don’t we need more walks like this on this Planet?

🤍 As a child, I would have not imagined that I could one day take part in such a walk, and I feel truly, truly blessed to have had the opportunity to connect with the local synagogue, the local mosque and the local Christian church.

✨ Thank you for opening your doors to us, thank you for welcoming us with your food, your smiles and words of hope for a future where we not only connect through difference, but we thrive from it too.

🎵 Because that is all we are, fractals on this Universe, sharing our own personal song.

And what a melody, what an orchestra we can create when we not only accept each individual song, within ourselves and those around us, but in addition we also bring it to the larger song that is our living experience.

On one of the photos above, I captured a young boy and his adopted grandma, both Walking in Unity.

Uni Verse ↔️ One Song

This says it all.

With equanimity, cohesion and love for our Humanity,

Maria Venusa 🤍

Why is fostering inner safety so important?

Well, I was invited to a networking event in Bootle at Lock & Quay a few weeks ago.

I arrived, and felt overwhelmed with the amount of people in the room (networking in this way doesn’t come easy to me, as it can feel both forced and lacking in organic relating).

🗣️ I could hear many parts of me speaking — the inadequate part that wanted to leave, the inner child in me comparing herself to others, the part of me that started judging the pub.

And as I started slowly listening to these parts, I placed my hand on my heart, and grounded myself a little. (…)
At this point, my intuition came forward.

🌸 I heard a clear “stay” from my inner knowing.
So I honoured this.

As I honoured her, I allowed a beautiful piece of magic to unfold.

I met some fellow puppet lovers (for those of you who know of my beautiful co-host and puppet Dylan who joins me on The Relational Thread Podcast, this is no news). 😁

Play On Productions 🎪 and I immediately started chatting, and excitably, Alexis asked me if I’d like to be a puppeteer for the Diwali Mela Festival in Manchester. I took seconds to say “YES”! 😍

What followed is no short of a miracle.

🪔❤️ The amazing Manchester Indian Society along with Play On Productions, namely Alexis, James on production, and many artists who created what was a beautiful, warm, loving, colourful, filled with spirituality and joy festival of light Diwali mela.

Honoured to have learnt so much about your history, your deities, your beautiful country and each several states and attires, your dance, your music and your food. Thank you. ❤️

Honoured to have been looking after the Amazing Hanuman! 🫶🏻

Honoured to have worked alongside Aki and James — such brilliant puppeteers & extremely funny — we’re the dream team! ✨

I will remember this day for as long as I live on this Earth.

And as I fold this short story, I want to leave you this:

Becoming Safe Within enough to listen to our intuition requires us to pay attention to and be compassionate with all of our emotions, whatever they may bring.

Because when we pause enough to listen with inner compassion, we allow space to hear the very subtle inner knowing inside of us.

And then?

Hm well that inner knowing often leads us to joy, to miracles and synchronicities, “breadcrumb by breadcrumb”. ❤️

With so much love,

Maria Venusa 🪔🫶🏻😊

It took me a while to share this.
I was contacted by and msn.com magazine a while ago in the first summer months about a feature (if you’re a kid from the 80’s you get me! Msn messenger and that, just before Meta came in to eat it all) — they mentioned how my work and my journey encapsulated an article they wanted to put forward called “The top self-made women to watch in 2026”.

I said no.
“It must be a scam” I thought.
They emailed me twice. I still said no.
They emailed a few times, saying that they really wanted to feature me.

I Checked in with my intuition. Okay. This feels legit.

Despite the immense amount of inner compassion and inner work I’ve done on myself, and despite knowing that I do impactful work, I still struggle with showing my accomplishments.
It’s a funny thing, knowing that you want to guide big changes on this planet, and when someone wants to celebrate you, to shy away.

I still do it. And yet after working with the little one inside of me who’s afraid of being mocked or told she’s too much, I sit with her.
And I say:
“Hey bubba, I know the past was not always kind to you, but that past has evaporated long ago.
Now it’s time to celebrate ourselves, fully, unabashedly, wholesomely, because only when we do, will we allow the world around us will do it too.”

Safe Within to model inner empowerment. Safe Within to shine. Safe Within to celebrate the empowered Woman that I am. Safe Within to Celebrate Me. 🔥
