What if your clinical waste container could help reduce infection risk before the waste even leaves the ward?

Clinismart was designed with infection prevention in mind. Its hands-free, bagless design helps eliminate unnecessary contact with waste containers, while a robotic sanitisation process delivers a level of decontamination that far exceeds industry requirements.

The result is a smarter approach to clinical waste containment that supports safety, cleanliness and operational efficiency.

In busy ward environments, waste segregation decisions happen quickly.

When the correct disposal option is not close, clear or convenient, staff are more likely to use the option that is easiest to access.

That isn’t a training failure, it’s a system design opportunity.

Sharpsmart’s Bag-to-Bed system supports point-of-care disposal with colour-coded bags, instructional labels, segregation posters and blended learning, helping clinical teams make clearer waste decisions where waste is generated.

Because better segregation does not happen in the waste compound.

It happens at the bedside, in the moment a decision is made.

Shaping the Future of Hospital Waste means designing systems that make the right decision easier in the flow of care.

Would you know how to identify clinical waste if you saw it?

Correct waste segregation starts with understanding what clinical waste is, how it differs from other healthcare waste streams, and why proper classification matters for safety, compliance and infection prevention.

Our latest blog breaks down the basics, including common examples of clinical waste, colour coding guidance and the risks associated with incorrect disposal.

Safe care doesn’t end when treatment does...

This World Patient Safety Day, the focus is on ‘Safe care for noncommunicable diseases’, including cancer.

For people receiving cancer treatment, countless people, processes, and systems work together to support safety across their care.

Some are highly visible. Others happen quietly in the background.

That includes what happens to cytotoxic sharps, IV bags and lines, PPE and other contaminated materials once they’ve been used. Safe containment, segregation, and point-of-use disposal are part of a well-managed oncology environment

As WHO points out: "Globally, 1 in 10 patients is harmed during health care, with around half of this harm being considered preventable. People living with NCDs are particularly vulnerable to harm due to the long-term nature of their conditions, ongoing treatment needs and frequent interactions with health systems. This repeated exposure increases the likelihood of harm over time. With some conditions, such as cancer, up to 1 in 3 patients experience adverse events during care. Many people also live with multiple chronic conditions, further increasing the risk of harm."

At Sharpsmart, our mission is simple: Making Healthcare Safer.

Today, we’re recognising all the people and processes working together to make safe care possible, at every stage.

The NHS 10 Year Health Plan sets a clear direction for the next decade of care: more care in the community, greater use of digital tools and a stronger focus on prevention.

So, what would a 10 year plan for hospital waste look like?

It would not just ask how waste is collected.

It would ask:
🟡 Can waste standards stay consistent as care moves across more sites?
🟡 Can waste performance be seen clearly by stream, site and department?
🟡 Can risk be reduced before it becomes an incident, cost pressure or compliance issue?
🟡 Can waste support safety, sustainability, productivity and Net Zero goals at the same time?

Hospital waste may not always sit at the centre of strategy conversations.

But it touches almost every part of the healthcare system.

Shaping the Future of Hospital Waste means treating waste as a system that can help healthcare become safer, smarter and more sustainable.

09/09/2026

Across the Northern Consortium, a system-wide approach to community clinical waste management delivered measurable results against a 2022 baseline:

🟡 33% reduction in collections
🟡 28% reduction in total spend
🟡 69% reduction in carbon emissions
🟡 Zero non-conformances recorded in the most recent quarter

The improvement was not driven by one change alone.

It came from looking at the whole waste system, including classification, containment, collection frequency, treatment routes, staff engagement and reporting visibility.

That’s the future of hospital waste.

Not more activity.

Better decisions.

Shaping the Future of Hospital Waste means helping healthcare organisations reduce costs, carbon, and operational pressures without compromising safety or compliance.

The cost of hospital waste is rarely just the number on the invoice.

What sits underneath can be just as important:
🟡 Waste placed in higher-cost streams than necessary
🟡 Duplicate collections across multiple providers
🟡 Staff time spent exchanging containers or correcting avoidable issues
🟡 Carbon impact from over-treatment
🟡 Compliance risks caused by inconsistent processes
🟡 Limited visibility across departments and waste streams

Continuous Improvement and Optimisation starts with understanding the whole system, not just negotiating the collection cost.

Visibility is the future of hospital waste, no matter how deep it goes.

What do healthcare organisations with strong sharps safety records have in common?

Research examining 'Exposure Aware' hospitals identified four key themes that help reduce potentially life-threatening body fluid exposures: education and training, communication, investigation and engagement.

Reducing exposure injuries isn't about one intervention. It requires a consistent, organisation-wide commitment to safer behaviours, stronger reporting cultures and ongoing learning.

This peer-reviewed study interviews clinicians to identify what measures are successful in reducing exposure to body fluid. Preventing the risk of BBP exposure.
