If my head is full the point of exploding.... I vacuum! Particularly if I sense my nervous system is shutting down (first sign of that for me is doom scrolling!)
Now Iโm not suggesting Dyson replaces therapy, but thereโs something surprisingly regulating about doing a simple, physical job when your brain feels overloaded.
Here's why:
๐ฑ It gets you moving. Physical movement can help shift some of that pent-up stress and restless energy, particularly if you prat around and dance like I do!
๐ฑ It gives your brain ONE job. When your head has 47 tabs open, focusing on a repetitive task can bring you back into the present moment.
๐ฑ It creates a sense of control. You might not be able to sort out work, the kids, your relationship or the state of the world, but you CAN deal with the Cheerios under the sofa.
๐ฑ You get an immediate reward. Messy floor to clean floor. Your brain likes visible evidence that youโve achieved something so its a good dopamine fix!
๐ฑ Repetitive movement can feel regulating. The rhythm, movement, white noise and predictability can help settle an overstimulated nervous system.
๐ฑ It interrupts rumination. Itโs much harder to sit spiralling in your thoughts when youโre physically engaged in something else.
๐ฑ Your environment matters. A calmer, less cluttered space can reduce some of the visual noise competing for your attention
So next time youโre stressed, overwhelmed or stuck in your head, donโt underestimate the power of doing something ordinary with your body.
Whack some tunes on, vacuum the floor, walk the dog, w**d the garden, fold the washing.
Sometimes your brain doesnโt need you to THINK your way out of how you feel.
Sometimes it needs you to MOVE.
Although if anyone wants to come and regulate their nervous system by vacuuming my house, I fully support your wellbeing journey..
Just saying...
