“Breastfeeding means you’ll never get any sleep.”

I hear this one a lot. But is it actually true? 👀

The truth is a little more nuanced. Research suggests breastfeeding mothers don’t necessarily get less sleep — and some studies have found they actually get more nighttime sleep than mothers who use formula.

And once breastfeeding is going well, there can be very little preparation involved in those night feeds. No bottles to make, no formula to measure, no kitchen trips at 3am.

I’ve written a new blog about breastfeeding and sleep, including what the research tells us, how side-lying breastfeeding can be helpful and the important safe-sleep considerations every new parent needs to know.

If you’re pregnant or have a newborn and worrying about how you’re ever going to get some sleep, this one is for you. 🤍

A little plot twist I wasn’t expecting… 🥲🩼💛

On my 33rd birthday, I had an accident on our cargo bike and ended up with a complicated leg fracture.

This means The Mama Coach is temporarily pausing appointments until at least December 2026. 🤍

But if you’re expecting a baby in 2027, or hoping for support with breastfeeding or those precious (and sometimes overwhelming!) early postpartum weeks, I’m still taking bookings for 2027! ✨

Whether you’re looking for antenatal education, lactation support or postpartum care, you can still get in touch to plan ahead.

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding while I recover. I can't wait to be back doing what I love: supporting mums and their babies. 🥹💛

If you’re expecting a baby in 2027, I’d love to hear from you!

“Knowing what to expect, what’s normal and what to look out for.” 🤍

This is exactly what I want parents to take away from my Bringing Baby Home class.

So often, first-time parents aren't looking for more information, they just want to know what those first few days and weeks will actually be like.

What will my baby do?
What's normal?
What should I look out for?
And what do I do if something doesn't feel right?

I love hearing that this class helped both mum and dad feel much more prepared for their baby’s arrival.

If you're expecting your first baby and want that same confidence, I'd love to have you join me for my next class.

You can read every baby book.

Save hundreds of Instagram posts.

Listen to podcasts on newborn sleep.

Join parenting Facebook groups.

Ask your friends what worked for them.

And still arrive home with your baby thinking:

“What on earth am I supposed to do now?”😅

Because more information doesn't always create more confidence.

Sometimes it creates more noise.

Especially when every person, book and social media account seems to have a different answer.

You don't need to know everything.

But knowing the important things clearly is what makes the difference.

To understand what normal newborn behaviour can look like.

To recognise your baby's feeding cues.

To know what to expect with sleep and nappies.

To have some ideas for soothing your baby.

And, perhaps most importantly, to know when something doesn't feel right and what to do next.

That's what real preparation looks like.

Not having every answer.

But having enough knowledge to make a decision, trust yourself and know when to ask for help.

Because your baby doesn't need a mum who has memorised every parenting book.

They need a mum who feels able to say:

“Okay. I know what I'm looking at. I know what I can do. And I know when I need help.”

That's exactly what I want you to leave my Bringing Baby Home class with.

🤍 Practical newborn care
🍼 Feeding
😴 Sleep
💩 Nappies
👶 Understanding newborn behaviour
🚩 Knowing when to seek help
🤍 Preparing for your own postpartum recovery

No overwhelm. No rigid rules. No pressure to parent a particular way.

Just the information you'll actually use when your baby is home.

You can spend months preparing for labour.

You can pack the hospital bag.

Write your birth preferences.

Choose your baby's first outfit.

Learn about contractions and pain relief.

And then eventually…

you are bringing your baby home!

And that's when a whole new set of questions can begin. 😅

“Is my baby feeding enough?”

“Why are they crying?”

“Is that noise normal?”

“Why are they awake AGAIN?”

“Is this poo supposed to look like that?”

“Should I be worried about this?”

For many first-time parents, this is the part of having a baby that they feel least prepared for.

Because preparing for birth and preparing to care for a newborn are two completely different things.

You don't need to know everything before your baby arrives.

But having a basic understanding of newborn behaviour, feeding, sleep, nappies, soothing and when to seek help can make those first weeks feel very different.

The goal isn't to become an expert.

It's to be able to think:

“Okay, this is happening. I have an idea of what to do next.”

That's exactly why I created Bringing Baby Home - Your Mini Support Package.

A practical virtual class for first-time parents who want to feel more prepared for the reality of those first weeks, not just the birth itself.

🤍 Newborn care
🍼 Feeding
😴 Newborn sleep
💩 Nappies
👶 Understanding your baby's behaviour

No pressure to parent one particular way. Just realistic, evidence-based information to help you feel more confident when you bring your baby home.

Breastfeeding shouldn’t feel like something you have to grit your teeth and get through. 🤍

A little discomfort in the early days can be normal as you and your baby learn together — but persistent, severe or toe-curling pain is a sign that something needs looking at.

If you’re wondering whether your ni**le pain is normal, what you can do to help sore ni**les, or when it’s time to ask for support, I’ve written a new blog covering what’s normal, what’s not and how to help.

And please remember: you don’t have to wait until you’re really struggling before asking for help.

If you’re the first of your friends to have a baby, you might be surprised by just how many opinions suddenly come your way.

Everyone has a story.

Everyone has something that “worked for them”.

And usually, they’re sharing it because they genuinely want to help.

But your baby hasn’t met their baby!

Your feeding journey may be completely different.

Your baby’s temperament may be different.

Your circumstances may be different.

And what worked brilliantly for one family might not be right for yours!

That’s why I don’t think preparing for your baby means trying to memorise every piece of newborn advice you can find.

It’s about having enough knowledge to ask:

Is this evidence-based?
Is this relevant to my baby?
Who is giving me this advice?
Does it actually work for our family?

Confidence doesn't come from knowing the answer to every possible newborn question.

It comes from having a solid foundation that helps you work out what matters, what is normal, and when you need help.

That is exactly what I want you to take away from my Bringing Baby Home virtual class.

We'll cover the practical things you really want to understand before those first few weeks at home - newborn behaviour, feeding, sleep, nappies, soothing and knowing when something needs attention.

No pressure to parent one particular way.

No enormous list of rules.

Just practical, evidence-based information to help you feel more confident when you bring your baby home. 🤍

Ladies, you do not need to toughen your ni**les before breastfeeding. 🤍

No scrubbing.

No rubbing.

No brushing.

No trying to “prepare” your ni**les for what is coming.

Instead, there are much more useful things you can do during pregnancy to prepare for breastfeeding.

✨ Learn how breastfeeding works
✨ Understand newborn feeding cues
✨ Learn about positioning and attachment
✨ Learn hand expression
✨ Know what normal newborn feeding can look like
✨ Think about where you'll get support if you need it

Breastfeeding is something you and your baby learn together.

So rather than preparing your ni**les, prepare yourself with knowledge and support.

And if you're currently pregnant and want practical preparation for those first weeks with your baby, my Bringing Baby Home online class is coming up:

📅 Thursday 22 October
⏰ 7:30pm
💻 Online
💷 €44.99

We'll talk through newborn care, feeding, nappies, sleep and what those first days at home can actually look like.

You'll also receive the recording and practical resources to come back to after the class.

Most newborn crying is normal and expected.

But as a midwife and children's nurse, one of the things I want parents to feel confident about is knowing when something doesn't feel right.

Your baby's normal behaviour will become familiar to you surprisingly quickly.

So if you notice a significant change, particularly alongside things like poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, breathing difficulties, fever or other concerning symptoms, it's important to seek appropriate medical advice.

And you don't need to wait until you're completely certain something is wrong.

If you're worried about your baby, it's better to ask.

Having a good understanding of normal newborn behaviour can make it easier to recognise when something is different.

This is something I talk about in my Bringing Baby Home online class, alongside practical newborn care, feeding, nappies, sleep and those first few weeks at home.
