“Your bloods are normal.” So why don’t you feel well?

Your results are within range, but you’re still exhausted. Your digestion is unpredictable, you’re sleeping poorly, and getting through an ordinary day takes everything you have.

A laboratory reference range helps clinicians interpret a result. It isn’t a personalised measure of your energy, comfort or ability to enjoy your life.

A reassuring result is useful. It doesn’t make your symptoms less real or mean there is nothing left to explore.

Your GP may care very much, but a 10–15 minute appointment leaves limited time to explore your diet, digestion, sleep, stress and hormones—and how they might be affecting one another.

Your body doesn’t work in separate departments. Pain affects sleep. Sleep affects pain. Digestive symptoms can restrict your diet, affecting nutrient intake and making eating stressful.

A functional approach looks at those connections, what might be contributing to your symptoms, and where personalised nutrition and lifestyle support could help alongside your medical care.

It won’t suit everyone, and it isn’t accessible to everyone. Medication can be essential, and people deserve support without judgement about the care they use.

But if you still feel unwell, it is reasonable to ask:
“I’m pleased my results are normal. What should we explore next?”

Normal does not automatically mean optimal. By optimal, I mean how you feel and function—not chasing perfect laboratory numbers.

You are a whole person, with a life you want to participate in. You’re not just a bag of symptoms to be managed.

🎃 A Halloween survival guide for IBD.

Halloween can bring a change to your usual routine: different foods, parties, late nights and plenty of treats. When you have IBD, that can mean a little extra thinking ahead.

Here are a few things that might help:
🍽️ Eat before you go. If you’re heading to a party and you’re unsure what food will be available, having a meal beforehand can take the pressure off.

🍬 Choose the treats you enjoy and tolerate. You don’t have to miss out on everything, but you know your own digestion best. If a particular food tends to cause symptoms for you, it’s OK to leave it out.

💧 Keep up your fluids. This is especially important if you’re experiencing diarrhoea or are out and about for the evening.

🚻 Know where the toilets are. Whether you’re at an event or out trick-or-treating, knowing your options can help you feel more comfortable.

🛋️ Make room for rest. If you’ve had a busy few days, it’s OK to keep plans simple or head home early.

When it comes to managing IBD, there's no one-size-fits-all. If you're celebrating Halloween, choose what works for you and enjoy the day your way. 🎃

I was delighted to attend a business connect & network meeting this morning with Network Ireland Kildare Branch in Merits Naas and introduce myself and my work.

I'm passionate about supporting people living with IBD and other autoimmune conditions through nutritional therapy, and I'm looking to connect with healthcare professionals who are open to a collaborative approach to care.

Because good nutrition is an essential part of our health — alongside appropriate medical care.

Are you a healthcare professional interested in connecting? I'd love to hear from you.

When you live with Crohn’s or colitis, a change in your skin might not be something you immediately connect with your IBD.

But the effects of IBD can extend beyond the digestive tract. Some skin conditions are linked to inflammation, while other changes may relate to medication or nutritional deficiencies.

That doesn’t mean every rash or irritated patch is caused by your gut. Understanding what’s causing a skin problem is more useful than assuming it needs another cream, or another food removed from your diet.

In this carousel in my **Beyond the Gut** series, we’re looking at the connection between IBD and your skin.

Have you ever experienced skin changes alongside your IBD?

"What supplement would you recommend for...?"

It's a question I'm often asked, but a useful answer needs a little more information.

What are you hoping to address? What medication or supplements are you already taking? And is this supplement suitable for your needs?

When making recommendations, I also consider the products ingredients, dose and quality, including how it's manufactured and tested.

Supplements can be very useful, but each recommendation should have a clear purpose, and be appropriate for the person taking it.

These are some of the questions that guide my recommendations, and that are worth asking before choosing a supplement.

Service Spotlight | Power Hour

Not everyone needs a 12-week nutrition programme.

Sometimes you simply want to talk through your current diet, ask questions and get some professional guidance on where to begin.

My Power Hour is a one-off consultation designed for people who would benefit from personalised nutritional advice without committing to a longer programme.

During our consultation, we'll discuss your current eating habits, health goals and any areas where you'd like some guidance.

Following the consultation, you'll receive a written summary with personalised dietary and/or lifestyle recommendations, giving you practical steps to work on at your own pace.

If you're looking for some direction with your nutrition, the Power Hour could be a good place to start.

A few photos from yesterday's National Women's Enterprise Day event at the Keadeen Hotel in Newbridge.

I was delighted to have the opportunity to showcase Body & Soul Nutrition as part of the She Succeeds event, organised by Local Enterprise Office Kildare.

It was a busy day, with lots of conversations, opportunities to meet other women in business and a chance to introduce people to the work I do as a Nutritional Therapist.

It was also lovely to step away from the laptop for a day and connect with people face to face, we really do have some amazing business women in Kildare!

A big thank you to Local Enterprise Office Kildare for the invitation and for putting together such a well-organised event.

Your sleep changes. Your patience feels thinner. Your mind feels busier or foggier. You notice unfamiliar aches or sensations, or meals you once enjoyed now leave you uncomfortable.

You don’t feel quite like yourself, but you haven’t yet worked out why.

Then the pieces begin to fit: you’re entering perimenopause, a transition you didn’t choose and can’t simply opt out of.

It can feel like being put on a hormonal rollercoaster without agreeing to it. And life still expects you to turn up, get things done and look after everyone else.

With World Menopause Day approaching, I wanted to acknowledge that adjustment. Getting to know your changing mind and body can be unsettling. You don’t have to enjoy every part of it or turn it into a story of personal growth.

But you still get a say in what happens next.

Perhaps that means making more time for meals, finding movement you enjoy, building strength or giving yourself permission to rest.

Perhaps it means asking different questions:
What do I need?
What do I want?
What am I no longer willing to keep doing?

It can also mean speaking up in relationships, at work or with your doctor, and expecting to be heard.

Your needs are changing. You deserve care and space to adjust.

And if you need help finding a way of eating that works for you now, you know where to find me. 💜

Joint pain can be a difficult part of living with Crohn’s or colitis, affecting everything from getting dressed to getting a decent night’s sleep.

Yet when appointments focus on digestive symptoms, painful or stiff joints may go unmentioned.

This post in my “Beyond the Gut” series explains how IBD can affect your joints, why joint symptoms don’t always follow the same pattern as your gut symptoms, and what to discuss with your IBD team.

If you’re preparing for an appointment, note when the pain occurs, any swelling or stiffness, and how it affects your daily activities. These details can help you explain what’s happening.

Save this post for later, or share it with someone who wants to understand more about living with IBD.
