She walks in head down, grunts hello, not much to say. 90mins later she bounces out the door, stops for a hug and giggles down the path.
You know that feeling when you know something’s wrong but you just can’t put your finger on it? Something feels off but you don’t know what? And all you get if you ask is a shrug, fine, nothing….
And as time goes on, things seem to get worse; she gets quieter, more withdrawn, spends more time in her room, and the more you notice the more she insists she’s fine, nothing’s wrong. Yet you know something isn’t quite right.
What do you do? Where do you go? No one seems to have an answer. They say it’s her being a teenager, it’s mood swings, it’s normal but you’re her mother and you know it’s not. She just seems to have dimmed. It’s not medical so you can’t exactly go to a doctor. It’s not really psychological either. The teachers say nothing is going on. But you’re her mother, you know her best and you know it feels like you’re slowly losing her.
You bring her to me to see if a session will help. You can’t remember when you last time you heard her giggle. Not only does she giggle down the path, she chats and laughs at home, tells her older sister she should come too, it’s not like therapy at all, it’s just really cool!
Always remember as mothers, you know your child best and while there might not be something actually wrong, you certainly know when something’s not quite right. X
