Estrogen declining? Let’s talk phytoestrogens

As oestrogen shifts through perimenopause and menopause, phytoestrogens offer a gentle, food-first way to support your body. These natural plant compounds have a structure similar to your own oestrogen, so they can have mild, oestrogen-like effects.

Where to find them

Soy foods like edamame, tofu, tempeh and miso
Lentils, chickpeas and beans
Ground flaxseed, sesame and sunflower seeds
Oats, rye and wholegrains
Broccoli, cabbage, berries and squash

Good to know

Grind your flaxseed so it doesn’t pass straight through
Add fibre-rich foods slowly to avoid bloating
If you have a history of breast, ovarian or uterine cancer, talk with your health professional before taking isoflavone supplements

Have you ever seen the Bristol Stool Chart before? Super interesting to help determine your bowel health.

Types 3 and 4 are the “just right” zone, and here’s why:

Too slow (Types 1–2): Food lingers in the gut, so more water gets pulled out, and stools turn hard and difficult to pass.

Too fast (Types 5–7): Things rush through, so there’s less time to absorb water and nutrients.

Just right (Types 3–4): Soft, smooth, and easy to pass. It’s a good sign that your fibre, fluids and gut movement are working well together.

Your gut gives you daily feedback. Learn to read it, and if you need support, book a consultation.

In recent years, the term “leaky gut” has moved from obscure medical jargon into mainstream wellness conversations. Known more formally as intestinal permeability, this condition is increasingly recognized in naturopathic and integrative health circles as a key contributor to a wide range of chronic health concerns.

What Is Intestinal Permeability?
The lining of the digestive tract serves as a selective barrier. It allows essential nutrients to pass into the bloodstream while keeping harmful substances—like toxins, microbes, and undigested food particles—out. This barrier is made up of tightly packed cells connected by structures known as tight junctions.

Perimenopause symptoms tend to occur in clusters, not in isolation. These are the 4 symptom clusters of perimenopause.

Hormones in Perimenopause - What's Declining and What Actually Helps: Perimenopause is often talked about as one big hormonal event, but it isn't. It's several hormones moving at different speeds, for different reasons, over what is often called the "second puberty": a two-to-ten-year (sometimes longer) transition, not a single switch that flips.

Understanding which hormone is doing what, and when, is what makes targeted nutrient and herbal support actually useful.

Below is a hormone-by-hormone breakdown. Read more here: https://www.nourishebotanicals.co.nz/post/hormone-by-hormone-what-s-declining-and-what-actually-helps-perimenopause

In clinic lately, I have been seeing many patients for their skin, both teenagers and perimenopausal women. Alongside looking at nutrition, one easy addition I often use is my herbal infusion, Hello Clear Skin; it contains -

Sencha Green Tea (Camellia sinensis) - for its antioxidant & detoxification support

Spearmint (Mentha spicata) - supporting antioxidant levels, contains antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, and helps balance hormones (specifically reducing androgens in women with PCOS)

Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale) - traditionally used to support liver function and to reduce inflammation. It acts as a natural diuretic to reduce water retention and is rich in the prebiotic fiber inulin, promoting healthy gut bacteria. Its high anti-inflammatory & antioxidant levels contain compounds that fight inflammation and oxidative stress, helping with skin health.

Burdock root (Arctium lappa) - again, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. It supports skin health (acne, eczema), acts as a natural diuretic and blood cleanser, improves digestion via prebiotic inulin, and helps regulate blood sugar.

Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica herb)- helps improve circulation & supports collagen production

Calendula (Calendula officinalis flower) also has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Helps with healing, reducing inflammation

Turmeric (Turmeric rhizome) - Natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant

Have been a little quiet on here this last week as I have been in the garden, prepping and planting hundreds of packets of seeds literally - I can't wait to see all the zinnias popping out of the ground again, they are so simple and sooooo pretty!
