What is the difference between extra virgin olive oil and normal olive oil? Which is better?
Though extra virgin olive oil may be a bit pricier, the health benefits certainly are worth it!
Olive oil is considered extra virgin olive oil when the olives are milled within 24 hours of their harvest, and the oil is extracted by mechanical means, not from heat or chemicals. Extra virgin olive oil is simply fresh olive juice, as it is the least processed form of olive oil. When purchasing extra virgin olive oil, look for oil packaged in darker bottles, and the stamp from International Olive Oil Council (IOC).

A few posts ago we talked about how some individuals are sensitive to fiber, and if this is the case a low FODMAP diet may benefit them. While on the topic of FODMAPs, what are some high FODMAP foods, and what are FODMAPs?
FODMAP stands for, “fermentable”, “oligo”, “di“, “mono-saccharides”, and “polyols”. Essentially, FODMAP foods include types of carbohydrates that are a little more resistant to digestion. However for those with digestive disorders, high FODMAPs can cause gas, bloating, stomach pain, etc.
High FODMAP foods include, wheat, apples, milk, black beans, garlic, and mushrooms.

Purple cabbage
Zucchini
Carrots
All sautéed
Add 4 ounces soft goat cheese
1 T italian seasoning
Salt/ pepper to taste
Add chicken or hamburger
Done!!
YUM!!

Last post we talked about fiber, and the importance of it. But for some, fiber can be challenging to digest. Those who struggle with SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) and SIYO (small intestinal yeast overgrowth) are very sensitive to fiber, and even have to avoid it for a period of time. Because of this, individuals struggling with SIBO or SIYO, should stick to low FODMAP foods until they heal. Low FODMAP foods provide adequate nutrition, but are typically low in fiber, and therefore easier to digest for some. These foods include broccoli, cucumber, kale, blueberries, kiwi, beef, chicken, lamb, and oats.

We have all heard of fiber, and how important it is. But what exactly is fiber and where do we find it ? Fiber is the indigestible portion of plant matter. Fiber helps to regulate blood sugar, glucose, and insulin levels. Fiber is found heavily in both fruits and veggies. A few examples of high fiber foods include asparagus, egg plant, green beans, apples, and bananas. In addition to fiber, fruits, and veggies are also a great source of carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.

Are all keto foods equally as healthy?

Many beginning the keto journey begin with the impression that processed foods such as bacon and cheese, provide the same nutritional keto benefits as avacados and organic grilled chicken. While it is possible to lose weight like this, this is certainly not the nutritious approach. A keto food can briefly be defined as a food with little to no carbohydrates. This can include foods such as hot dogs, nacho cheese, fast food burger patties, bacon, and so on. Just because a food is classified as keto, doesn’t necessarily mean it is good for the keto diet! In order to safely partake in the keto diet, make sure the foods you are consuming are nutritious and whole. High fiber green veggies, pastured eggs, grass fed beef, nut butters, etc. are all excellent for the keto diet! As these foods are excellent sources of fiber, fat, and protein.

What’s wrong with canola oil?
Canola oil is sometimes mistaken as a healthier alternative to other oils, but in this post, I am going to talk about a few reasons as to why this isn’t the case. Canola oil, found in foods such as chips, crackers, salad dressings, etc., is highly processed. Canola oil, is crossbred with the rapeseed, and overtime in abundance this seed can cause health issues, as it is toxic to humans. Canola oil, is also an oil not high in saturated fat, meaning it is not an oil that should be used for cooking. Because canola oil is primarily unsaturated, it is very fragile, and becomes damaged when being used to cook. When our bodies consume damaged oil, it damages cell membranes. When this happens, the body will take a full 132 days to fully undo the damage of the oil just consumed. With this information in consideration, try to opt for healthier alternatives to canola oil! Butter, coconut oil, ghee, avocado oil, are all much healthier and less processed oil alternatives.
