Finnish doctors treated severe depression with repeated sauna sessions and rewired stress hormones.

Finland has more saunas than cars, and uses them for everything. Researchers ran clinical trials of repeated sauna use against depression and found measurable symptom improvement, with evidence pointing at increased BDNF and improved autonomic nervous regulation, which are the same mechanisms some antidepressants target.

The pathway is heat shock. Sitting in 80 degree heat for 20 minutes raises body temperature and releases heat shock proteins, which protect cells and stimulate neuroplasticity. Simultaneously, the parasympathetic system takes over, heart rate variability improves, and the stress axis gets a workout with a guaranteed recovery period. It is a controlled stressor rather than a relaxation trick.

That distinction matters clinically. Exercise works the same way, and many depressed patients cannot start exercising, but almost anyone can sit in warmth. Trials show the effect is modest but real, and crucially it is additive to therapy rather than a replacement, which is the honest position for a low cost treatment with no side effects.
