Different diagnoses. Sometimes, a strikingly similar patient. 👀
What do Lyme disease, Long COVID, POTS, MCAS, and pelvic venous disease have in common? More overlap than many people realize.
I had the pleasure of collaborating with Dr. Alexis Cutchins last year, exploring the similarities we see in our complex patient populations. It was wonderful to reconnect and continue learning from her expertise.
Some of the most valuable insights happen when different specialties come together, share perspectives, and look beyond a single diagnosis. Because sometimes, a different perspective helps connect the dots. ✨
Have you ever wondered how your diagnoses or symptoms might be connected?

Life changed dramatically for John Armstrong after COVID. Once an active husband, father, and provider, he began facing overwhelming fatigue, brain fog, memory difficulties, and crashes that impacted his daily life.

In sharing his story, John reflects on his experience with Long COVID, the subsequent discovery of Lyme disease and iliac vein compression, and the progress he has made throughout his journey.

We are grateful to have John as a patient at MedRenew Clinic, where he is participating in our Hybrid Program with Summer Powers, CRNP.

His experience highlights the challenges of navigating complex health conditions and the importance of perseverance, support, and finding healthcare providers who are willing to keep searching for answers.

We’re so proud to celebrate our patient, Jodi Handley Cherry, and the publication of her book, Out of the Wilderness.

Jodi’s journey through Lyme disease, long COVID, and multiple chronic health challenges is one of perseverance, faith, and hope. In her book, she opens the door to the often-hidden world of chronic illness and shares what it’s like to search for answers when symptoms are complex, life is disrupted, and the path forward isn’t always clear.

But Out of the Wilderness is about so much more than illness. Jodi shares how faith helped her navigate some of the darkest and most uncertain seasons of her life, while offering encouragement to others who may find themselves walking a similar path.

She also thoughtfully explores the challenges faced by people living with chronic illness and the importance of compassion and understanding from family members, friends, faith communities, and health care providers.

At its heart, Jodi’s story reminds us that suffering does not have to define a life. There can still be faith, purpose, joy, and resilience—even in the wilderness.

We’re grateful that Jodi has chosen to share her story and give voice to so many who are navigating chronic illness. Congratulations, Jodi, on this meaningful accomplishment! 📖💙

Shared with Jodi’s permission and consent.

It's upsetting but I think it bears repeating every spring that ticks can be smaller than the size of a poppy seed.
Yes, even microscopic ticks can carry disease.

Please always use prevention methods and if bitten, get treatment as soon as possible.

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month 💚

At our clinic, we see firsthand how Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses can impact every aspect of a person’s life—often in ways that aren’t immediately visible.

Lyme disease is frequently misunderstood:
• Not everyone develops a bullseye rash
• Early symptoms can feel like the flu—fatigue, fever, headaches, joint pain
• Testing isn’t always reliable in the early stages
• Ticks can carry multiple infections, not just Lyme

If you’re spending time outdoors this season, remember to protect yourself:
✔️ Use tick repellent
✔️ Wear long sleeves and light-colored clothing
✔️ Check for ticks after being outside
✔️ Remove ticks promptly and shower after outdoor exposure

If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and seek care. Early recognition matters.

To those navigating Lyme disease—especially if you’ve struggled to be heard or diagnosed—you are not alone. We’re here to listen, to treat, and to walk alongside you every step of the way.

Many people think tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever don’t happen in Alabama, but that’s not true.

After a recent hunting trip, Alabama Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth shared how a tick bite he initially ignored led to a serious case of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever weeks later.

Symptoms can take time to appear and may include fever, cough, nausea, and more—and without prompt treatment, it can become life-threatening.

If you’ve been bitten by a tick or feel off after time outdoors, don’t ignore it. Early care matters.

Grateful for the opportunity to learn, grow, and connect at this year’s IMA conference. Being surrounded by like-minded practitioners who are advancing new perspectives in integrative medicine and exploring emerging science is both inspiring and energizing.

These are the conversations that move healthcare forward—rooted in curiosity, innovation, and a commitment to treating the whole person. Excited to bring these insights back to the clinic and continue serving with a broader, more informed perspective.

There’s nothing like connecting in person with friends, new and old. For so many, IMA feels like home.
