Before the trick-or-treats, before the merriment of the we know today, cultures respected the deeper spiritual meanings of , originating with the ancient observance of . The costumes began as a way to fool the otherworldly spirits that came to visit the world of the living. Spooky tales arose as this was believed to be a period when mysterious events could happen because of the opening of the barrier between the realm of the spirits and the realm of the living. Food & offerings were presented as a way to appease and honor these spirits. So, as you celebrate this evening, remember you are paying homage to traditions dating back millennia!

As the bewitching, haunting, ethereal time of All Hallow's Eve, Samhain, Halloween, Day of the Dead, and All Souls' Day approaches, 'tis indeed the season for all things "spooky!" The veil between this earthly plane and the netherworld beyond, will reach the apex of connection between the two realms. But, we ALSO learned that some locales tend to actually ATTRACT this otherworldly energy, explored in a timely post from last October – "A 'Haunting' We Will Go!" Certain words & phrases transcend their era, their locale, their origin. Yet, their meanings or the concept of these words, are almost universally understood! Think about "sowing good karma"... "a knight in shining armor"... "being a good Samaritan." Each espouses the benefits of being kind, helpful & generous. Remember, on , what goes around, comes around!

We find a bit of symmetry in the fact that & , coincide today. If you look at the commonality closely, you'll see that BOTH involve preserving someone's dignity, and allowing those who feel as if they've "lost" pieces of themselves, to find relief, comfort & a degree of "normalcy." And, most importantly, awareness of both can ease the pain of those who suffer!

Too often, we hear about someone needing to escape life to "find themself." But, it occurs to us that it might be difficult to find your purpose, your goal, your passion, if you REMOVE yourself from the life where this might exist...as our so concisely states!

We all have connections to people, who make our lives better, happier, easier, or more fulfilled. Yet, how often do you actually SAY it? Enter ! Created in 2010 by Linda Jew, who had a friend and his son pass away, and realized that she had never told them, "You matter to me." She began telling people she knew that they mattered, and decided to start a day centered around the phrase. She believed the phrase could have a profound effect on those that heard it. October 7 was chosen as the date because it was the New Moon in Libra on that day. The New Moon represents new beginnings, and Libra deals with relationships, making it a fitting time for the day's observation. In the first year, Bangladesh, France, Kenya, United States, United Arab Emirates, and United Kingdom participated in the day, and it expanded to other countries in the following years. And, if anyone hasn't said it, YOU matter to us!
