Too busy to cook? Crack an egg!
When time is tight and dinner feels like one more thing on your to-do list, eggs might just save the day!

They’re affordable, versatile, and packed with high-quality protein, choline, and other important nutrients. And they’re not just for breakfast!

Most of these meals come together in 15 minutes or less, and a few can be made ahead for an even easier weeknight.

Pair your eggs with whole grains, veggies, beans, or fruit.

Because eating well doesn’t have to mean spending more time in the kitchen. We love to keep things simple.

What’s your favorite way to eat eggs for dinner?

We’ve had a lot of clients tell us they’re enjoying more high-protein foods lately. We love that people are paying more attention to their protein needs!

And our job is to help them meet those goals while making sure they don’t miss out on other important nutrients along the way.

Two popular client mentions are Barebells protein bars and Catalina Crunch cereal. Great! 👍🏻 They’re convenient, taste good, and make it easier to get more protein.

But if our shopping carts start filling up with protein-packed convenience foods, could we be overlooking some of the other things food has to offer?

For example, a Barebells bar has 20 grams of protein. But a serving of Greek yogurt topped with chia and pumpkin seeds can offer a similar amount of protein, along with a wider variety of nutrients, healthy fats, and fiber.

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying a protein bar. Sometimes convenience and extra protein are exactly what we need.

But prioritizing protein doesn’t have to come at the expense of all the other nutrients that make food nourishing. 💚

October is Menopause Awareness Month! While hot flashes and sleep changes get plenty of attention, there’s another important change happening behind the scenes: bone loss.

As estrogen declines during the menopause transition, bone loss accelerates. We often talk about calcium, vitamin D, protein, and strength training for bone health, but there’s one underappreciated food worth mentioning.

Dried plums. Yep, prunes!

Research in postmenopausal women suggests that eating just 5–6 dried plums daily may help preserve bone density, particularly at the hip. Their unique combination of polyphenols and nutrients may help support healthy bone remodeling.

Add them to oatmeal, pair them with nuts, or enjoy them straight from the bag.

Sometimes supporting our health is as simple as adding something good to what we’re already doing.

Do kids really need protein powder? 💪
With protein shakes, powders, and bars showing up everywhere, it’s no surprise that parents are wondering whether their kids need more protein, too.

The good news? Most kids can meet their protein needs through everyday foods. And while protein is essential for growth, development, and muscle repair, more isn’t necessarily better.

Protein powders can be convenient in certain situations, particularly for young athletes with higher needs or kids who struggle to eat enough. But they aren’t automatically necessary, and quality, safety, and age-appropriateness matter.

We’re grateful to Food Network and writer/dietitian Serena Ball, MS, RD, for inviting McDaniel Nutrition Therapy to contribute to this important conversation!

“Is it OK if I eat the same thing every day?”

We get this question more often than you might think at McDaniel Nutrition Therapy!

And the answer? It depends.

Finding meals you love and keeping them on repeat makes sense. It’s convenient, satisfying, and helps reduce decision fatigue.

But dietary diversity matters, too! Different foods provide different vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and fibers. And a greater variety of plant foods can help support a thriving community of gut microbes. 🌱

The good news? You don’t have to reinvent your meals to get more variety.

Keep your favorite meal templates and simply swap ingredients. Broccoli one week, peppers the next. Farro today, brown rice tomorrow.

And if breakfast and lunch stay the same while dinner offers more variety? That can work, too!

The goal isn’t to make eating more complicated. It’s to find small ways to bring more diversity into what already works for you.

What’s one meal you could happily eat every day?

f you’ve ever thought…“Why am I bloated all the time?” or “I must be eating something wrong.”

You’re not alone. Many experience it, but few understand why it happens.

Bloating is one of the most common digestive complaints, but the cause isn’t always obvious. It can be linked to constipation, stress, eating too quickly, gut sensitivities, IBS, food intolerances, and more.

That’s why there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution.

If bloating is disrupting your daily life, a personalized approach can help identify possible triggers and create strategies that work for your body and lifestyle.

Heart health advice has changed & our understanding of cardiovascular risk has become much more nuanced than simply looking at a total cholesterol number.

On October 7, Jennifer will be talking about what we know now, including LDL cholesterol, Apo(B), Lp(a), newer ways of assessing cardiovascular risk, and the nutrition and lifestyle factors that continue to matter most.

Her goal is to make all of this a little less overwhelming and a lot more practical: What numbers are worth knowing? What can you actually influence? And where should you put your energy when it comes to protecting your heart?

The protein messages we’ve been absorbing aren’t just affecting adults. Our kids are hearing them, too.

And I’m seeing it show up in the pre-practice snacks athletes tell me about: protein bars, beef jerky, cheese sticks, protein shakes…

Lots of protein. Sometimes very little carbohydrate.

Protein absolutely matters for young athletes. But when they’re heading into practice, carbohydrate is the body’s preferred fuel for higher-intensity exercise and often what’s missing.

So instead of just grabbing the protein bar, think about what you could add:
🍌 Protein bar + banana
🥨 Beef jerky + pretzels
🍎 Cheese stick + fruit + crackers
🥣 Greek yogurt + fruit + granola
🥪 Turkey + bread or a tortilla
🥛 Protein drink + graham crackers

And if practice starts in 20 minutes and there’s no time to make the “perfect” snack?

Prioritize an easy-to-digest carbohydrate. A banana, applesauce pouch, pretzels, crackers, dried fruit, granola bar, or sports drink can do the job.
Protein is important.

But pre-practice needs more than protein. It needs fuel.

A little update from Jen: the Love You More podcast has a new name: Here & Human Wellness. 🌿

The new name reflects where her conversations have been heading: toward nourishment, midlife, family life, and what it means to be human through all of it.

The first episode under the new name is out now. In “Tiny Abandonments,” Jen shares what surprised her about hosting a silent retreat, why coming home felt harder than she expected, and the small ways we sometimes set aside what we feel or need.

You can listen wherever you get your podcasts. You can also find the audio episode and the new Behind the Scenes video on Jen’s Here & Human Wellness Substack.

She’d love to have you there!
