When someone with cancer is tired or anemic, it can be easy to assume it’s simply part of the disease or treatment. But sometimes, there’s more to the story.

One lab that can provide an important piece of the puzzle is ferritin.

Ferritin helps us understand the body’s iron stores, but interpreting it isn’t always straightforward, especially in cancer care. Inflammation, infection, and the cancer itself can affect ferritin levels, which is why it should be considered alongside other labs and the patient’s overall clinical picture.

The goal isn’t to chase a number. It’s to ask: What could be contributing to this patient’s anemia or fatigue - and is there something we can address?

If you or someone you love is navigating cancer and anemia, consider asking your healthcare team whether a more complete evaluation of iron status is appropriate. Understanding your labs can help you have a more informed conversation about your care. 🧡

One of the things we're most excited about as we settle into our new home is becoming an even bigger part of the Darien community and surrounding towns. We loved meeting so many neighbors this weekend, and we're looking forward to welcoming everyone into our new space 😁

That’s a good question to ask when you hear about cancer testing options. ctDNA testing looks for tiny fragments of tumor DNA in the blood may help better inform cancer care decisions.

Whether it’s useful for *you* depends on your cancer type, where you are in treatment, and the specific test - results are one part of the bigger picture your care team considers.

Carbohydrates, protein, and fat - often called “macros” - each have a role in nourishing your body. But the balance that works for you depends on your health, activity, preferences, and what goals you’re working toward.

A macro target also needs to fit real life: your appetite, your schedule, the foods you enjoy, and any treatment or symptoms affecting how you eat.

Know the signs. Make time for screening.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month can be a reminder that changes in anatomy deserve attention - from a new lump or skin dimpling to unusual ni**le discharge or changes in size or shape.

These changes don’t always mean cancer, but they deserve follow-up. Contact your healthcare provider if you notice something unusual, even if your next screening isn’t due.
