Pregnancy and postpartum bring big changes. Care should be tailored to yours.

The Massage Therapy Foundation recently funded a three-year study examining prenatal massage and maternal mental health, including postpartum depression, anxiety, pain, and sleep. It’s an important area of research. Massage is complementary care, not a treatment for postpartum depression or any medical condition.

During pregnancy, sessions can use supported side-lying positioning, keeping pressure off the abdomen. After delivery, timing depends on your recovery and birth experience. Massage is typically appropriate once you’re cleared by your provider; ask your OB or midwife about timing. When appropriate, tailored pressure can address the low back, hips, and shoulders while avoiding healing tissue.

October pressure swings can make fall migraine flare-ups feel more noticeable. 🍂

We can’t control barometric pressure, and massage is not a treatment or cure for migraines. But we can work on some of the muscular tension that may accompany headache patterns, especially through the neck, jaw, and shoulders.

Targeted, gentle work may complement a migraine management plan by supporting relaxation, mobility, and awareness of tension. Julie and Holly are trained in TMJ/TMJD-focused work and can tailor sessions to your needs.

If headaches are persistent, worsening, new, or accompanied by concerning symptoms, please speak with your doctor. Massage should complement, not replace, medical care.
