I went to school, through 11th grade, with Ed. I doubled up classes to graduate a year early... but I knew him well. Also, on Flight 93, was my daughter-in-laws Aunt Sandy Bradshaw.
25 years ago... Clintonian Edward (Ed) Porter Felt boarded United Airlines Flight 93.
Felt graduated with the Clinton High School Class of 1977. He was part of the National Honor Society, and voted "Most Likely to Succeed." After two degrees from Colgate University and Cornell University, Felt worked as a top engineer at BEA Systems, an e-business infrastructure software company in New Jersey. Less than a year before that fateful day, Felt was granted a patent for "Method of authentication based on intersection of password sets."
On September 11, 2001, Ed Felt boarded Flight 93 for a business trip to San Francisco. At 9:28, the hijacking began. By 9:35, the hijackers were reported to be in the cockpit. They had already announced that they had a bomb, revealed knives, and killed one flight attendant. Passengers were herded into the back of the plane.
Felt is suspected to have made the last call out of the flight, at 9:58, alerting 911 from the bathroom at the rear of the plane that there was a "Highjacking in progress." The plane crashed just five minutes later, at 10:03, in Shanksville, PA. At the time of the crash, Felt was just 41 years old. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, and other family. As reported by WKTV NEWSChannel 2, there will be a ceremony today at the Edward Felt Memorial on the Clinton Central School campus at 5PM.
