Your back finally feels better. Now comes the part nobody talks about: keeping it that way.
Here's what the research says about that. In a large Australian trial, people recovering from low back pain who joined a clinician-supported walking and education program had fewer episodes of pain coming back than those who didn't. Walking, paired with a little guidance, turned out to be one of the simplest ways to protect a recovered back.
You don't need a program, a gym, or special gear to start:
1. Begin with 10 to 15 minutes at a comfortable pace, most days of the week.
2. Build up gradually rather than jumping to long walks.
3. A flat, familiar route (think Swamp Rabbit Trail or your own neighborhood loop) is a fine place to start.
4. Stop and get checked if walking brings on sharp pain or pain running down a leg.
That movement-first approach is how we build care plans here in Greenville: what you do between visits matters as much as what happens in the office.
If back pain has come back before after you thought it was behind you, that's exactly worth a conversation. Send us a message here, or call (864) 288-2136.
One safety note: pain traveling down a leg with numbness or weakness, sudden severe pain, or pain after a fall or accident needs a medical evaluation first.
