Thinking about risks and benefits is what physicians do all day!

Blood pressure. Hemoglobin A1c. LDL cholesterol.

These are not just heart numbers. They are brain numbers. Uncontrolled blood pressure in midlife is one of the strongest modifiable risk factors for dementia we have. Chronically elevated blood sugar damages small vessels throughout the brain. And LDL — especially when elevated for decades — contributes to the same plaque burden we see in Alzheimer’s disease.

The frustrating part? Most people don’t know their numbers. Or they were told they were “fine” without understanding what fine actually means for long-term brain health.

Know your numbers. Ask what they mean for your future — not just your next appointment.

Talk to your doctor about what’s right for you.

Creatine is having a moment, but not for the reason you think.

Most people associate it with muscle and the gym. And yes, the evidence for creatine and muscle preservation in older adults is strong. Combined with resistance training, it meaningfully improves strength and lean mass. That matters more than people realize — low muscle mass is directly linked to cognitive decline.

But here’s what’s newer: in May 2025, the first clinical trial of creatine in patients with Alzheimer’s disease was published. Brain creatine increased by 11%. Cognition improved on multiple measures.

Small study. No control group. This is a signal, not a conclusion. But the mechanism makes biological sense — your brain runs on energy, creatine is part of that system, and both decline with age.

Who may benefit most: adults over 50, women in perimenopause or menopause, and anyone eating little to no meat (your baseline creatine is already lower).

Form: creatine monohydrate. Dose: 3-5g daily. No need for anything fancier.

Talk to your doctor before starting anything new.

Aging is inevitable. What are your fears about aging and what can we do to calm those fears.

Transparency is medicine is hard to find and the insane price inflation is inexcusable.
