💊 Bonnie Meketsy is a Certified Pharmacy Technician at CORNERSTONE APOTHECARY in Marengo, IA, owned by Towncrest Pharmacy. Bonnie has served her community for more than 20 years as a pharmacy technician.

💉 Bonnie is certified in immunizations and as a Community Health Worker. She says the most rewarding part of her role is when patients enter the pharmacy and know her by name, and they trust the pharmacy staff to take care of them.

🥊 Bonnie is hopeful for a future with PBM reform. She has “watched reimbursements dwindle down to almost nothing, making it challenging for pharmacies to keep their doors open.”

Day 2 of 7 Day Detox (Hour 40 of 48 hour fast) ❌ 🍕

So what the heck is actually going on inside my body? 🧐

Lets break it down by the hour 👨‍⚕️

🕐 0–6 Hours: Postprandial State
Your body uses glucose from your last meal for energy.
Insulin levels rise to facilitate the storage of nutrients, including glucose, fatty acids, and amino acids.

🕕 6–12 Hours: Glycogen Depletion
Your liver starts breaking down glycogen (stored glucose) to maintain blood sugar levels. Gluconeogenesis begins: The liver converts non-carbohydrate sources, like lactate, glycerol, and amino acids, into glucose.

🕐 12–24 Hours: Transition to Fat Burning
Liver glycogen stores are depleted. Your body shifts to breaking down stored fat into free fatty acids and glycerol. Ketogenesis begins: The liver converts fatty acids into ketones, which can be used as an alternative fuel source for the brain and muscles.
Insulin levels drop, and glucagon increases, promoting fat breakdown.

🕞 24–36 Hours: Ketosis Deepens
Ketone production ramps up, supplying more energy to the brain.
Protein breakdown (muscle catabolism) slows as ketones reduce the need for glucose from amino acids. Autophagy accelerates: Cells break down damaged or old components for energy and repair.

🕙 36–48 Hours: Enhanced Fat Utilization and Cellular Repair
Ketones are now the primary energy source, especially for the brain, while muscles rely on fatty acids.
Autophagy peaks: Damaged cells, proteins, and organelles are recycled, promoting cellular renewal. Growth hormone levels increase, supporting muscle preservation and fat metabolism.
Inflammation decreases: Cytokine production drops, potentially reducing chronic inflammation.

Key Hormonal and Cellular Changes
Insulin: Continues to drop, minimizing fat storage and increasing fat breakdown.

Glucagon: High levels maintain energy balance by stimulating glycogenolysis, gluconeogenesis, and lipolysis.

Cortisol: Rises slightly to help mobilize energy reserves but may cause temporary fatigue or stress if levels are too high.

Autophagy: Clears out cellular debris and may protect against aging and disease.

Brain Adaptation: Ketones provide up to 75% of the brain’s energy needs, often leading to mental clarity and reduced hunger.
