Netflix’s former CEO once said their biggest competitor was sleep. He wasn’t joking.

Streaming platforms are built to keep you watching. Autoplay starts the next episode in seconds. Every episode ends on a cliffhanger. Your brain gets a small reward each time, and stopping starts to feel harder than continuing.

Research backs this up. A 2017 study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that binge watchers had poorer sleep quality, more fatigue, and more insomnia symptoms. The main driver was mental arousal. Your brain stays engaged with the story long after the screen goes dark.

Here is how to take back your night:

• Turn off autoplay. This one setting removes the automatic “yes” to another episode.
• Decide your episode count before you press play. Two episodes means two episodes.
• Stop mid-episode, not at the end. Cliffhangers sit at the end on purpose. Stopping halfway leaves less of a hook.
• Set a screen curfew 30 to 60 minutes before bed. Use an alarm as your cue to shut it down.
• Keep the TV out of the bedroom. Your bed should signal sleep, not entertainment.
• Swap the last episode for a wind-down routine. Read, stretch, or listen to something calm.

Your show will still be there tomorrow. The sleep you lose tonight won’t come back.

Pick one change and start tonight. Turning off autoplay takes 10 seconds.
