rvice staff are people with disabilities themselves, and this peer model facilitates a better relationship between the Independent Living Skills Specialist and the individual being served. Two questions we ask all consumers before getting involved with us: "How badly do you want to achieve your goals?" and "Are you willing to work hard to accomplish them?" SILO's services are person-centered so individuals determine their individual goals, not other people. SILO helps the individual acquire the tools needed to accomplish those goals.

Marilyn Tucci and Brandon Heinrich from SILO were thrilled to be guests at the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) in Woodside, Queens, celebrating a monumental achievement: 50% of the city's taxi fleet is now wheelchair accessible!

This is a victory many years in the making, and Marilyn's personal connection fueled her advocacy. Her mother was a wheelchair user living in NYC and faced the daily challenge of inaccessible transportation. This firsthand experience ignited Marilyn's passion to fight for change.

At the event, Marilyn and Brandon also connected with Joe Rappaport, Executive Director of the Brooklyn Center for Independence of the Disabled, and his dedicated team. Collaborations like these are vital in continuing to push for a more inclusive New York.

This is a significant step towards ensuring everyone, regardless of mobility, can navigate our city freely and independently.

Our Story

The Suffolk Independent Living Organization (SILO) has been a staple of the disability community in Suffolk County since 1985. An Advocacy and Information and Referral agency, it has worked with individuals, businesses, and agencies to promote equal access for people with all disabilities. SILO is not a "case management" agency; rather, our focus is on empowerment, mentorship, knowledge, and advocacy. Most of our service staff are people with disabilities themselves, and this peer model facilitates a better relationship between the Independent Living Skills Specialist and the individual being served. SILO is Suffolk County's only independent living center. We need your support. If you are a person with a disability, living in Suffolk County, SILO urges you to become more involved in making our community more accessible. Whether it is attending a peer support group, advocacy training, or volunteer work, your skills and personal experiences can assist SILO in achieving its goal of full integration of people with disabilities throughout Suffolk County. We need you to become involved!
