Had such an amazing anniversary trip to Maine. It was worth it to wake up at 5am to see the sunrise at Cadillac Mountain! Ate a ton of amazing food (ridiculous amount of dessert) and great hikes.

You’ve already proven to yourself you can follow a diet.

You can track your macros, prep your meals, have no “bad” foods, and make time for the gym. You’ve lost weight doing all of those things before.

But when you slowly start to fall out of those habits, the weight starts creeping back and your first thought is:
“I need to be more disciplined.”

When you say this, it usually means more willpower to just resist temptation.

So you start making rules.

Meal prep every lunch so you’re not tempted to eat snacks at work.
No dessert during the week.
Stay under your calories every day.

Those rules might actually help you make progress at first.

Until Wednesday or Thursday comes around where you didn’t eat breakfast, a meeting goes through lunch, and you end up ordering takeout with your coworkers.

Now you’ve gone over your calories, and your first thought is: “Well, I already screwed up today.”

So you stop worrying about dinner and maybe you eat less the next day to make up for it.

I see this pattern SO often.

You’re making more rules because you think they’ll help you stay in control.

But when you can’t follow those rules, you feel like you’re a failure and just don’t have discipline.

And your solution is to create even MORE rules.

One of my clients described this perfectly:
“If I had one bad thing, I had to have a million bad things after that.”

She told me that if she ate something she considered bad, she’d sometimes avoid eating the next day to make up for it.

Recently, she had carrot cake at a birthday party.

The next morning, she woke up, did her workout, ate her usual breakfast, and went on with her day. She’s down 18lbs since we started.

On our zoom call she said: “There’s no after.”

She didn’t feel like she had to restart or compensate.

This is why I don’t give my client more food rules when they’re struggling.

I want to understand the rules they’re already following, why those rules feel necessary, and what happens when they can’t follow them.

If you’ve tried four different diets in the last three years, I’m willing to bet every single one worked at first. Until it didn’t.

Every diet works on the same basic principle: eat less, create a calorie deficit, and lose weight. During the first few weeks, it’s easier to stick to. The plan is new, you’re engaged, you’re motivated, and nothing has gone wrong yet.

Then a week gets crazy. Work gets chaotic. Someone drops a box of donuts on the office breakroom table. By Thursday night, you’re completely wiped out, and you don’t want to eat that dry chicken breast you prepped over the weekend. Now your plan that worked well under controlled conditions stops working.

So you probably blame yourself at this point and assume you lacked discipline. You look for a stricter version, a “cleaner version,” low carb, and you try again.

But you’re bringing the exact same life and patterns into the new diet.

Stress is still there, the social pressure when you go out to dinner with coworkers. They all still exist and don’t get solved by changing your macros again.

You keep trying to change what you eat without looking at the situations that make the plan difficult to stick to in the first place.

That’s exactly where I would start before jumping into another diet.

If you want to talk through what’s actually getting in the way for you, send me a DM. I read and respond to everyone!

You can’t eat a banana without someone telling you it has too much sugar.

Seed oils are apparently killing you. Your morning coffee can’t be consumed on an empty stomach. And now someone on Instagram is explaining why you should feel bad about eating a brownie.

We’ve gotten to the point where people are genuinely worried about whether they’re eating the wrong type of rice.

I’ve had these conversations with actual clients.

It’s not just food either.

Now, apparently, going for a run or riding your bike isn’t good enough unless you’re monitoring your heart rate and making sure you’re in Zone 2.

What happened to doing cardio because you enjoy it? Or because you want to go hiking with your family without feeling completely out of breath?

And don’t even get me started on how we approach stressful weeks.

You can’t meal prep on Sunday, so you figure you’ll start eating better next week.

You only have time for two workouts instead of four, so you don’t bother going at all.

When did taking care of yourself become something you either do perfectly or not at all?

Look, I’m all for optimizing your nutrition and training. I literally do this for a living. But it should support YOUR life and not what influencers are telling you.

Food is meant to be enjoyed.

It’s meals with your family. It’s going out to dinner with your significant other or friends. It’s having a brownie because you genuinely want a brownie.

And exercise should help you do more of the things you enjoy in life.

Not become another thing you feel guilty about because you didn’t do it exactly the way someone on Instagram told you to.

At what point did we forget that the whole reason we’re trying to improve our health is to improve our lives?

Because if everything you’re doing for your health is just adding more stress, anxiety, and guilt to your day, I think it’s worth asking what you’re actually trying to accomplish.

Losing weight and knowing how to keep it off are two very different things.

After 17 years of dieting, this client lost 27 lbs and has maintained it for 3 years.

And we never once tracked macros or calories together.

We spent our time working on how to handle food, stress, and changes in her life without feeling like she had to start over every time something didn’t go to plan.

Because what’s the point of losing the weight if you have no idea how to keep it off?

The more people I coach, the less I care about macros and just asking if they completed their workouts.

You can easily download an app that does both of those things for $20/month.

But a lot of the people I work with have already tracked all of that for years. They have had times where they were consistent, focused on calories, went to the gym, and were “locked in” with their nutrition.

And when they come to me, they explain how they ended up falling off and gaining the weight back — or maybe never saw results in the first place.

Because they spent so much time focused on following all the rules they were “supposed to” follow for their health. And when they couldn’t, it felt like they failed.

But all that focus on whether they followed the rules meant they rarely stopped to look at what was actually happening in the moments they struggled.

What happens when they’re stressed?
Whether they notice they’re full while they’re eating or 20 minutes later when they feel stuffed.
What they tell themselves after eating something they didn’t plan for.
Whether they barely eat all afternoon and then feel completely out of control at dinner.

That stuff matters more than hitting macros and a workout.

Helping clients learn the skills to make better decisions without needing the plan to go perfectly. That’s how you finally stop spinning your wheels.

I’m not a drill sergeant coach that’s going to sit here and say “you just don’t want it bad enough.”

But there’s also a point you have to realize that taking care of yourself only when you “have time” is part of the reason you keep falling off.

I get it, we are all busy and stress is high. There are absolutely going to be seasons where you have less time and energy.

But by now you’ve probably realized life is never going to consistently give you the perfect amount of time, energy, and motivation to do everything the way you planned.

And if that’s the only version of taking care of yourself that you know how to do, every time life gets crazy you end up right back at “I’ll start again when things calm down.”

Then after doing that over and over, you start thinking there must be something wrong with you because you “just can’t stick to anything.”

And somehow the people who CAN stay consistent have this magic trait that you just don’t have.

And the people that can just have some magic trait you don’t.

Just tracking your macros, scheduling your workouts, and trying to remove bad foods isn’t a plan. It can be part of it, but not all of it.

You’ve tried it for years.

You don’t need another person giving you more s**t to follow. You need to understand why you keep ending up back in the same place every time you can’t follow it.
