Acid reflux is a common condition that many suffer from (I got a nice taste of this during my second pregnancy and wow is it miserable!).
Certain foods and beverages can trigger this including acidic foods, high fat foods, and caffeine or alcohol.

The good news is that you don’t have to cut all of these foods out as some may not be problematic or you may be able to tolerate small amounts. And other diet and lifestyle changes may also help even more than avoiding certain foods.

This can include:
🔹Eating smaller more frequent meals or having larger meals earlier instead of dinner
🔹Avoiding laying down for 3-4 hours after eating
🔹Walking after meals
🔹Chewing your food well and sitting to eat
🔹Figuring out WHY you have acid reflux as this can often be addressed

If you want to see your digestive health improve this fall, this is the one thing you are doing wrong:

Avoiding foods to try to control your symptoms instead of adding foods in that can benefit your gut!

Your gut benefits from getting in adequate amounts of fiber (both soluble and insoluble), prebiotics, and probiotics. And when you are limiting your diet it is hard to meet your basic nutritional needs, let alone the nutrients that your gut bacteria needs!

Do this instead:
🔹Add color. Don’t just eat green vegetables, get in other colors such as orange, red, yellow, and purple. Different colors mean different nutrients, including prebiotics (plant fibers that feed your gut bacteria).
🔹Add a plant with every meal. Fruits, veggies, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds can all help you meet your fiber needs.
🔹Increase fiber intake SLOWLY. Increasing too fast can cause some very uncomfortable digestive symptoms.
🔹Get in natural sources of probiotics from foods before going down the supplement road. Yogurt, kefir, kombucha, miso, and fermented foods with live cultures can all be great options.

Of course, certain digestive conditions may require you to limit some of these foods so please consult with a Registered Dietitian that specializes in digestive health disorders. ❤️

I can honestly say that I feel better in my mid/late 30’s than I ever did in my 20’s. And this is while being a busy mom of 2 and business owner.

I was doing all the wrong things to try to fix my digestion in my 20’s and on top of that was struggling with restricting my diet and hating my body. I was drinking alcohol (often heavily) at least 3-4 days a week. I was constantly anxious. And I did tons of cardio and minimal strength training.

Here is what changed in the past few years:
🔹I stopped restricting my diet and listened to my body and cravings.
🔹I focus on more strength training. I still enjoy distance running but this is a no go without adequate strength workouts to support it.
🔹I gave up alcohol completely. I was tired of feeling terrible and constantly thinking about drinking and not being able to enjoy events without it.
🔹I go to therapy regularly.
🔹I learned to love my body instead of criticizing it. My body carried my boys and I am so grateful for that.

I help my clients improve their digestion by learning to trust their bodies again instead of restricting food!

Have you noticed that your digestive symptoms get even worse when you are stressed? You are not imagining it!

This is because our gut and brain are connected. When you feel stressed your brain will send these signals to your gut. This can result in changes to our digestive patterns, often slowing things down 💩 or going too much and having diarrhea.

Unfortunately many people are chronically stressed and don’t even realize it because it is their normal. I can relate as a mom and business owner!

You can’t control when stress comes into your life, but you can work on how you respond to it. Doing something that helps relieve stress for you is so important. This can be something like:

🔹Waking up before the kids to have some time to yourself
🔹Going for a walk outside or exercising
🔹Treating yourself to a coffee
🔹Taking some deep breaths
🔹Reading a book
🔹Going out with friends
🔹Working with a therapist who can help you with strategies for managing stress

Feeling stressed about food? This is where we can help!

Your fear of carbs is hurting your digestion. Yes, I said it!

Carbohydrates are your body’s energy source. And when you don’t have enough energy, your body can’t perform properly. And this includes digesting food!

Many foods that contain carbohydrate are also beneficial for your gut (hello fiber and prebiotics!). Fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes are all examples.

The key with carbs is to balance them properly with our other macronutrients (protein and fat) and to choose higher fiber options more often.

Ready to finally lose your fear of foods and learn to eat a balanced diet to improve your digestive health?

You are probably aware that fiber is important for digestion, but did you know that there are different types of fiber? And depending on the symptoms you are experiencing you may need to focus on increasing or decreasing the certain types.

Insoluble fiber does not dissolve when it comes into contact with water. It helps keep everything moving 💩 through your gut. You can get insoluble fiber from skins and seeds of fruits and vegetables as well as your whole grains. If you have diarrhea you may want to temporarily decrease insoluble fiber. If you are struggling with constipation increase this type of fiber gradually.

Soluble fiber does dissolve when it comes into contact with water and forms a gel consistency. This helps slow digestion down and can be beneficial for reducing blood cholesterol. It can also help make your stools easier to pass. Think of the insides of fruits and vegetables or beans (not the skins or seeds). Soluble fiber is beneficial for both diarrhea and constipation.

Enjoy your fiber friends, but add it in slowly if you’re not used to having it. For most this means 1-2 new foods per week and monitor how your gut is adjusting to it.

Never underestimate the power of a walk outdoors. Moving your body while calming down your nervous system can help your digestion.

During all of the seasons you will find me outside walking (or running). And this has been a game changer for my gut health instead of just doing intense cardio workouts indoors.
