Fear has a way of showing up loud in pregnancy. Especially when the stories you’ve heard don’t match the birth you’re hoping for.

Lilly’s two births at Maine Medical Center are a perfect reminder that autonomy isn’t about the setting.

It’s about the preparation you do, the voice you practice using, and the steadier confidence that can grow when you decide - you’re allowed to be in charge of your own experience.

In this episode Lilly talks through how her mindset moved from fear to something much more grounded — and what that actually looked and felt like during her two births at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

If you’ve ever wondered whether a hospital birth can still feel like yours, this one is worth a listen. ✨💗

Every baby arrives on their own terms. ✨💗

Shandi’s first labor stretched for days. With her second, she moved through the night, mostly alone - focused, just her and the work.

In the morning when she called her midwife Julie, the intensity was already deep. Her support arrived in the exact window she needed it.

She birthed her baby at home in the water in the early morning light with the loving support of her husband and her midwives.

Autonomy please!

Because yes—autonomy is absolutely possible in a hospital birth. You are the leader of your birth journey, and the decisions are up to you.

Recommendations and hospital policies are not laws. You can always (respectfully) say no, ask more questions, or ask for more time.

Childbirth education is a key part of making autonomy real.

When you understand the process, the options, and the language being used around you, “no” becomes clear instead of scary. You know what you’re declining, what you’re choosing, and why.

Preparation is what turns autonomy from a nice idea into something you can actually achieve.

Being in a hospital doesn’t have to mean handing over your authority. With the right preparation, you can show up knowing your rights, knowing your options, and knowing that “no” is always available to you.

Autonomy isn’t reserved for one type of birth or one setting. It’s available wherever and however you give birth, as long as you remember that the final say is yours! ✨💗

If you’d like steady, informed support so you can stay in the driver’s seat during your birth, I’d love to be your doula. DM me or head to MyMaineBirth.com to book a free consult.

Birth is an altered state.

In that deep place, the usual ways of speaking can sometimes slip away - words can get hard, needs can feel stuck inside you, and the room can feel like it’s moving at a different speed than your mind.

What always stands out to me is how skilled midwives are able to stay tuned in to all of it.

Not just the clinical pieces, but the energy, the body language, the quiet signals that someone might not be able to name out loud in the moment.

They notice when something shifts and gently offer the next right thing—sometimes before you’ve found the words for it yourself.

There’s something quietly powerful about that kind of presence. Being held by someone who can read the room so well that they meet you exactly where you are.

In episode 171 of MyMaine Birth Asha shares her first birth story, a birth center birth at Holly No. 7 Birth center in Bangor with loving support from her midwives. ✨💗

Asha drove home from her very first prenatal visit at the hospital in tears. At about 10 weeks, with perfect blood pressure and no ultrasound that day, she was told she was obese, would probably get preeclampsia, and would need an early induction.

Her mom said - will you please at least call and talk to the midwives over at Holly No. 7 ?

She did. And that one conversation changed everything!

You are the authority in your birth, and the choices are up to you. If something doesn’t feel right, you can always look at what your other options are.

Most midwives offer free consultations which can be a great opportunity to get to know more about the way they work, and to learn more about the different pregnancy and birth options that are available to you - without any commitment.

Tune in wherever you normally listen to podcasts to hear Asha share her beautiful birth center birth story!

A ribeye for breakfast could change your life if you’re in the thick of morning sickness.

Protein before anything else is one of the few things that actually takes the edge off for a lot of women.

Steak, eggs, yogurt, cheese, leftovers. Whatever you can get down.

My girl turned seven this weekend with the wind in her hair, enjoying some birthday cake on the summit at sunset! 🌅❤️

It’s been a super busy month for me. So if you’ve recorded an episode with me and are wondering when it’s coming out - or if we’ve done photos and you’re wondering when you’re going to see them, the answer is .. very soon!

I’m currently accepting doula and birth photography clients for late winter/spring of 2027 so if you’re hoping to work with me it’s best to reach out sooner rather than later.

I do occasionally accept last minute bookings when my schedule allows, but generally I like to work with families through as much of your pregnancy as possible.

My doula support includes unlimited access to my calendar and you’re welcome to schedule as many calls as you’d like as you navigate pregnancy leading up to labor and birth and for up to 6 weeks postpartum.

Both of my packages include birth photography, maternity photography and a beautiful heirloom photo album! ✨💗

Reach out to schedule a free consultation call with me over zoom, or visit my website for more details MyMaineBirth.com

This year I started my own little mini, spinoff postpartum project, inspired by The Postpartum Project

I grew just over 50 varieties of dahlias! 🥰

I’ve been harvesting them all season and bringing jars of fresh cut dahlias to the postpartum moms I get to walk with.

It’s been such a fun way to share a little extra beauty and pop of color in those early days after birth.

If you received one of these this year, I hope it made you smile. Holding so much love for all postpartum moms! ❤️

In episode 170 of MyMaine Birth Jessica shares her first birth story, a home birth with loving support from Sacopee Midwives

She started care at the hospital but it just didn’t sit right. She went home, talked to her husband, and then they found Brenda and the Sacopee team instead.

Jessica shares what it was like to be supported without being pressured, and what it feels like when your midwives actually trust you.

She explains how she knew she was low risk, why a real backup plan still mattered, and the kind of presence that lets a first-time mama stay in her own process.

We also get the practical bits: how protein first thing in the morning finally shifted brutal nausea, and her experience with the extra support of chiropractic care and acupuncture during pregnancy.

This is the kind of story that reminds you - you don’t have to do it alone to keep it yours. ✨💕

Back in episode 15 Megan shared about her first two births — one in the hospital, and then a precipitous labor where the midwives didn’t make it in time and she birthed unassisted.

In Episode 169 Megan returns to share her third birth story. Going into it, she knew she wanted to be at home.

But this time, she sat with the question a lot of women sit with right now: Do I actually want someone there… or should I just plan a freebirth?

She admits she got wrapped up a little in the dogma of the freebirth movement.

The pressure to do it all on your own.

The idea that needing skilled support means you don’t trust your body.

And then she landed somewhere honest.

She wanted a midwife there. ✨💕

She didn’t choose a midwife instead of trusting birth.

She chose a midwife because she trusted birth — and she knew what she wanted beside her while it unfolded - someone with clinical skill if she needed it, plus a doula for the emotional holding.

Autonomy isn’t proving you can do it alone. It’s choosing the support that actually matches your history, your values, and your nervous system.

Megan’s third birth is a homebirth with loving support from her midwife, Leslie Walters of Water of Life Midwifery.

You can hear her story wherever you normally listen to podcasts or on my website MyMaineBirth.com
