Why We Hired a Patient Advocate - by Becky Korinek
I never saw myself needing an advocate for my mom, but here we are. My mom has always been independent, intelligent, witty, creative, and truly the life of the party. My two sisters and I live in the same town as mom and we’re all very close. So why would we need to hire a Patient Advocate?
Things started falling apart about 2.5 years ago when Mom had a heart attack while on a bus trip to Myrtle Beach. While recovery went well, and she flew home a few days later, boy did that slow her down. Mom went from two medications to seven, and it’s been like a game of whack-a-mole ever since. Blood pressure. Hemoglobin. Dizziness and nausea.
After a series of unexpected low blood pressure incidents, Mom was unable to continue driving. Losing the car resulted in her feeling left behind, isolated and lonely. She’s now made the choice to move to an independent living community.
Again - why hire a Patient Advocate? Although we all live in the same town, my two sisters both work full-time. I have a flexible job, but just had major surgery. With three or four weekly appointments, it’s impossible for us to handle mom’s calendar right now.
Our advocate, Laura, takes care of everything.
Just yesterday, she transported Mom to the appointment, went into the room, asked questions, took notes, and followed through to ensure that Mom understood the steps going forward. She emailed my sisters and me detailed notes within 24 hours. In preparation for an upcoming procedure, Laura changed the meds in mom’s pill pack.
Honestly, even after I’m recovered, we will likely keep using Laura as our advocate.
Believe me when I say that Outreach has taken a huge weight off of our shoulders!
