Our volunteers play an important role in helping participants build confidence, reach goals, and experience the joy of Equine-Assisted Services. We really need more helping hands to make these experiences possible!

✨ No horse experience needed! We'll teach you everything you need to know. All you need is a willingness to learn and a heart for helping others.

💛 EDUCATIONAL WEDNESDAY: HOW DO OUR SIDEWALKERS SUPPORT OUR PARTICIPANTS? 🐴

A sidewalker might look like someone simply walking beside a horse, but there's so much more happening during a therapeutic riding session! From helping riders feel secure to celebrating those exciting “I did it!” moments, our sidewalkers play an important role in each participant's experience.
Here's how they make a difference! 👇

🐴 PHYSICAL SUPPORT
Every rider has different physical needs. Our sidewalkers may provide light physical support to help participants maintain their balance, stay properly positioned, and feel secure in the saddle. This helps riders participate as safely as possible while focusing on the activities in front of them.

🧠 EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT
There's a lot to learn during a riding session! Sidewalkers may help participants remember instructions, follow directions, or work through a new activity. Sometimes, it's as simple as offering a reminder or encouraging a rider to try something independently. Every small step forward is an opportunity to learn!

💛 EMOTIONAL SUPPORT
Learning something new can be challenging, and that's where encouragement matters! A reassuring smile, a patient presence when something feels difficult, or an enthusiastic celebration when a participant reaches a goal can make a world of difference. Sidewalkers help participants feel supported as they discover what they're capable of.

The best part? Support looks different for every participant. Sometimes it means lending a helping hand, and sometimes it means stepping back and letting a rider shine on their own.

Our sidewalkers may walk beside the horse, but the impact they make reaches so much further. 💛

We're incredibly grateful for the volunteers who show up, cheer our participants on, and help make these moments possible. You are an important part of what makes HTR special! 🐴💛

🐴 Heartland Therapeutic Riding is ready to find a unicorn! 🦄

Heartland Therapeutic Riding (HTR) is looking for a special horse to join our team and make a difference in the lives of our participants! ❤️
We’re specifically looking for a larger horse, approximately 15.3–16.3 hands, who would be a good fit for our therapeutic riding program.

We know the perfect horse might not actually be a unicorn, but we’re hoping to connect with someone who knows of a wonderful horse looking for their next job and a meaningful purpose!

🐴 Educational Wednesday: There’s More to the Horse-Human Connection! 💙

We see the smiles, growing confidence, and special connections that happen at Heartland Therapeutic Riding. But how do we better understand why horses can have such a meaningful impact?

That’s where research comes in! 🔬

Research helps us move beyond what we observe and better understand the potential benefits of equine-assisted services, who they may help, and how we can continue improving the programs we offer.

Today, we’re sharing research from University of Colorado Anschutz that adds to our understanding of this incredible field. Take a look below! 👇

Horseback riding may help children with autism better manage behavioral and emotional challenges, according to new research. 🐎

The study provides strong evidence suggesting that therapeutic horseback riding can help reduce hyperactivity in children with autism and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Researchers also found benefits from horse-related activities that don't involve riding, including improvements in emotional regulation and social functioning.

At Heartland Therapeutic Riding, having comfortable, well-fitting saddles is so important for both our horses and our riders. We are so grateful for Karen Withstandley, owner of The Refined Equine, and the knowledge, care, and expertise she brings to helping keep our horses properly fitted!

A good saddle fit makes such a difference in our horses’ comfort and well-being, allowing them to do their jobs comfortably while helping our riders feel secure and supported in the saddle. We appreciate Karen taking the time to help us make sure our equine partners have what they need to continue doing such important work!
