This is big news! Congratulations to Bay Area Lyme Ventures backed Galaxy Diagnostics. Thank you U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for your support of Lyme patients.

Big news for Galaxy – and one that means so much for our team, as well as the clinicians and patients who inspire our work!

Galaxy Diagnostics has been selected by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as one of five Excellence Prize winners in the LymeX Visible Voices Prize, receiving a $20,000 award!

Our winning resource helps clinicians recognize when cognitive and psychiatric symptoms may warrant investigation for Lyme and associated vector-borne infections.

Mental health symptoms can affect every part of a person’s life. Patients deserve care that addresses those symptoms while also investigating what may be contributing to them.

When an infection could be part of that puzzle, we want clinicians to know when to investigate and patients to know what questions to ask. We also want them to have the tools to take that next step.

That goal shaped this resource, which combines published research with our CEO ’s experience navigating her husband Russ’s illness.

We hope this recognition helps bring the possible role of infection into more conversations between patients and their doctors.

Thank you to HHS and the LymeX Visible Voices Prize team for recognizing this work, and to our team for bringing it to life. đź’š

Lyme Myth Buster - there is NO safe time after being bitten by a tick…

REMINDER: THERE IS NO SAFE MINIMUM ATTACHMENT TIME FOR TICKS!

🔬 Researchers found that infected Gulf Coast ticks transmitted R. parkeri to mouse subjects within one hour of attachment. This bacterium causes a form of spotted fever rickettsiosis, a different illness from Lyme disease, and it spread quickly to the lymph nodes and internal tissues.

The researchers studied mice, so we still don’t know how quickly this bacterium passes to people. The one-hour finding also doesn’t tell us how fast other tick-borne infections spread, but it is significant to note that potentially deadly Powassan virus, though rare, can be transmitted by a deer tick in 15 minutes.

Avoiding tick bites to the best of your ability is the ideal preventative strategy to decrease your chances of contracting tick-borne infections. If you find an attached tick, remove it promptly. Don’t assume there’s no risk just because it hasn’t been there long.
