Don’t get fooled. It’s not the same.
Fruit is not the same as candy, for several reasons.
Yes, both contain sugar. But whole fruit comes packaged with fibre, water, vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols. That structure slows eating and digestion, increases fullness, and produces a different metabolic response from concentrated sweets.
Candy, meanwhile, is energy-dense, easy to overeat, and high in added sugars, with little fibre or micronutrient value.
BUT, it’s OK to enjoy a couple pieces of candy on Halloween! It’s ONE day! You’d have to eat 81 mini Reese’s peanut butter cups to gain 1 lb of fat!
So don’t fear a banana when compared to gummy bears and don’t meltdown with guilt after a couple pieces of candy because:
Context matters.
Food structure matters.
Your eating pattern matters.
