At the The Way I See It session “Evolving Considerations in Hip-Spine Surgical Patients” during the AAOS 2026 Annual Meeting, speakers repeatedly returned to a central theme: hip and spine surgeons can no longer afford to evaluate patients through separate biomechanical frameworks.

🏒 From Rhode Island Hockey to the international stage.

Dr. Michel Arcand of Brown Orthopedics and University Orthopedics, Inc. continues his work at the SICOT World Congress in Kyoto, Japan, presenting 10-year research on the impact of Rhode Island high school hockey’s 50/70 rule.

The rule was implemented to improve player safety and sportsmanship by suspending players who accumulate 50 or 70 penalty minutes during a season.

A decade later, the research found a 30% reduction in players accumulating 25 penalty minutes in a season, with no players reaching the 50- or 70-minute thresholds.

It’s exciting to see research that began right here in Rhode Island being shared with orthopedic and sports medicine specialists from around the world.

🌎 Brown Orthopedics research on the world stage!

University Orthopedics, Inc. Sports Medicine Surgeon Dr. Michel Arcand presented research at the SICOT World Congress in Kyoto, Japan, examining testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) and tibial fractures.

The research found that the TRT group had a decreased incidence of proximal tibial fractures and a lower rate of surgical treatment compared with the control group. There was no difference between the groups for diaphyseal and distal tibial fractures.

Congratulations to Dr. Arcand and his fellow researchers on sharing their work with orthopedic specialists from around the world!
