At 43, Tracey was a busy, active mother of two young boys. Her days were filled with family and an active outdoor life, including horseback riding. Always conscious of her health, Tracey had a routine mammogram in May of 2017, and the results were negative for any kind of growth or lump; however, in August she felt something she knew wasn’t right.

Tracey had Stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer. By September, she underwent a mastectomy, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. Tracey did her best to keep all their family routines the same, focusing on her life rather than her illness. In June 2018, after chemotherapy and radiation were finished, she underwent breast reconstruction surgery. It wasn’t until after the surgery that she learned that her surgeon used donor skin in her procedure. At the time, Tracey wasn't aware that was something that could be donated.

Full of gratitude, Tracey wrote to her donor family and included these words: “The donated tissue has allowed me to heal enough to continue my cancer battle. I have two beautiful, smart sons who mean the world to me. I am determined to beat cancer. Your family member will remain in my thoughts for their kindness and generosity." 💙💚 DonateLife Thank you to MTF Biologics for this story in recognition of Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day!

"If giving him a piece of my liver meant giving him the chance to grow up, to run, to play, to go to school, to become whomever he was meant to be someday – there was never really a choice. There was only him."
Maxwell was born with biliary atresia, a rare liver disorder that affects newborns. At 12 weeks old, he had a procedure that gave his liver some more time, but it wasn't a cure. Maxwell would eventually need a liver transplant. This past July, his mom, Juliane, became 5-year-old Maxwell's living donor.
Juliane and Justin, Maxwell's dad, share their journey in hopes of raising awareness of living donation and its potential to help other families waiting for a lifesaving gift. 💙💚 You can read Juliane's tribute to Maxwell on our website: https://donatelife.net/stories-of-hope/maxwell-liver-recipient/

At 19, Brianna was diagnosed with severe lung disease and was 26 when she received her lifesaving gift of new lungs from her donor, Katie. At the time of her transplant, she was in her junior year of nursing school. Brianna reflects that Katie and her family not only gave her new lungs, but a future – a year after her transplant, she graduated as a registered nurse and began working at the very hospital that saved her life, Johns Hopkins Medicine. 💙💚

Organ, eye and tissue donation hadn't been a frequent topic in Kaleb’s family conversations, but as it turned out, all of them were registered donors. When the time came to honor Kaleb's wishes, that made one of the hardest decisions of their lives just a little easier. They knew how much helping others had meant to him.
In his mother's words, making the decision to donate Kaleb's organs and tissues was painfully gut-wrenching. But knowing that his gift could save or heal others’ lives helped their broken hearts hurt just a little less.
Since losing Kaleb, his family has shared his story and watching others choose to register as donors because of him fills their hearts with joy. Kaleb may no longer be with them physically, but he lives on through the lives he touched and the lives his gifts continue to heal. 💙💚 Thank you to our partner, Solvita, for sharing this story with us!

DMV partnerships can really go above and beyond. This year, the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT), in partnership with Iowa Donor Network, launched “Drive for Life: Emily’s Legacy DMV Tour.”
Created in collaboration with recipient mother Liz Markert, the campaign aimed to raise awareness of the importance of donation while inspiring more people to register as donors.
The tour honored Liz’s daughter, Emily Markert, and highlighted the lifesaving impact of organ, eye and tissue donation. “At every DMV office I visit, I not only share Emily’s story, but I also hear powerful experiences from others whose lives have been changed by donation. So many strangers are connected through hope, courage, and second chances.”
Liz says the experience has deepened her sense of purpose: "At every stop, I’m reminded this is about more than awareness. These conversations are legacies of love and generosity made possible by donors and the families who carry them on.”
Liz completed her 99th DMV visit on May 27, 2026 💙💚🚗
