Keep Growing: Challenge Yourself

Personal growth doesn't stop when we reach adulthood. Every new skill we learn, every challenge we face, and every goal we pursue helps us become stronger, wiser, and more confident.

Tips
• Read books that help you grow.
• Learn a new skill. I always remember that my mom learned to tap dance when she was in her 60’s – and she was pretty good! She was part of a group called Dancing Grannies. They would perform at nursing homes and schools. They had a blast and were so much fun to watch!
• Step outside your comfort zone.
• Set meaningful goals.
• View mistakes as opportunities to learn.
• Never stop being curious.

Did You Know?
Research suggests that lifelong learning and embracing new challenges can strengthen memory, improve problem-solving abilities, increase confidence, and contribute to greater life satisfaction. Growth keeps both the mind and the spirit engaged.

Encouragement
You don't have to become a different person. Keep becoming the best version of the person God created you to be. Self-care isn't about putting yourself first. It's about taking good care of yourself so you can better serve God and others.

Remember: Every healthy choice you make is an investment in your future self.

Practice Self-Compassion

Many of us are far harder on ourselves than we would ever be on someone we love. Self-compassion isn't making excuses or lowering your standards—it's treating yourself with the same kindness, grace, and understanding you would offer a good friend.

If giving yourself grace is tough for you, ask yourself what you would do if a friend or loved one were in your situation. What would you say or do? Offer yourself that same kindness.

Tips
• Notice your self-talk.
• Replace harsh criticism with encouragement.
• Learn from mistakes instead of dwelling on them.
• Remember that everyone struggles sometimes.
• Celebrate progress, not perfection.
• Extend yourself the same grace that God extends to you.

Did You Know?
Research has found that people who practice self-compassion tend to experience lower stress, greater emotional resilience, less anxiety, and increased motivation. Being kind to yourself doesn't weaken you—it often helps you grow.

Encouragement
You are a work in progress—and that's okay. Growth happens one step at a time.

Remember: Every healthy choice you make is an investment in your future self.

Sometimes small steps are enough. Sometimes we need extra support. If that’s where you are, I’m here to help.

Use Your Time Intentionally

Time is one of life's most valuable resources. While we can't create more of it, we can choose how we spend it. Using our time intentionally helps us focus on what matters most.

Tips
• Begin each day with your top priorities.
• Schedule time for what matters most—including rest.
• Limit unnecessary distractions.
• Learn to say no to things that don't align with your priorities.
• Break large projects into smaller steps.
• Leave room in your schedule for relationships, fun, and unexpected opportunities.

Did You Know?
Research links good time management with lower stress, better performance, and greater well-being—particularly life satisfaction. The goal isn't to fill every available hour; it's to make room for what matters most.

I am a big believer in having things scheduled – flexibly though because life tends to happen. I have 2 Mac desktops (home and office), 2 iPhones (ditto) and an iPad. One of my favorite things about them is that when I put an event into the calendar in one of them, it goes into all the others – magic! I love how it helps keep me organized. And yes, I’m the nerd who color codes my calendar. I’m very visual so the colors make it easy to see what I’m doing very quickly.

Encouragement
Don't just spend your time—invest it wisely in the people and activities that matter most.

Remember: Every healthy choice you make is an investment in your future self.

Declutter Your Space, Declutter Your Mind

A cluttered environment can make it harder to focus, relax, and feel in control. While none of us can keep everything perfect, creating a more organized space can reduce stress and make daily life a little easier.

Tips
• Start with one drawer, shelf, or countertop.
• Spend just 10–15 minutes decluttering each day.
• Donate items you no longer use.
• Create simple systems to stay organized.
• Keep only what adds value or serves a purpose.
• Celebrate progress instead of striving for perfection.

Did You Know?
Research has linked cluttered spaces with greater stress and difficulty focusing. Clearing even one small area may help your space feel calmer and easier to use.

I have said for years, “clutter oppresses the spirit”. And I firmly believe it. Last week I was eating dinner with my oldest son. He lives in a house with several other young men and he recently switched rooms. He got his bed and dresser moved but, due to his busy work schedule, he hasn’t had time to put other things away. He said things were all over the floor and it’s driving him crazy! I laughed and told him he comes by it honestly.

Encouragement
You don't have to organize your entire house today. Small improvements made consistently can make a big difference over time. Start with one drawer and go from there.

Sometimes small steps are enough. Sometimes we need extra support. If that’s where you are, I’m here to help. I work with clients both online and in person.

Set Healthy Boundaries

Setting healthy boundaries isn't about keeping people out—it's about protecting your time, energy, and well-being so you can be your best for the people who matter most.

Tips
• Remember that it's okay to say "no."
• Don't feel guilty for taking care of yourself.
• Protect time for rest and renewal. I was struggling with this one recently and God reminded me that Jesus regularly took time alone for himself. (Maybe because his disciples drove him crazy at times?). So I decided taking alone time for myself was ok – even necessary!
• Spend more time with people who encourage and support you.
• Recognize that you can't solve everyone else's problems.
• Respect other people's boundaries as well.

Did You Know?
Setting limits on what you can take on can help protect time for rest and reduce stress. Healthy boundaries give you room to care for yourself while staying connected to others.

A Thought to Remember
Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is allow others the opportunity to learn, grow, and solve their own problems.

If I rescue someone from every consequence, I may also remove one of their greatest opportunities to grow.

Supporting someone doesn't always mean removing every obstacle. Often, it means encouraging them, believing in them, and allowing them to discover their own strength while knowing you're there when they truly need you.

You don't have to do everything for everyone. Sometimes the healthiest word you can say is "no."

Remember: Every healthy choice you make is an investment in your future self.

Strengthen Your Relationship with God

Caring for your spirit is just as important as caring for your body and mind. A growing relationship with God provides strength, hope, wisdom, and peace—especially during life's most difficult seasons.

Tips
• Spend time in prayer each day.
• Read and reflect on Scripture.
• Worship regularly.
• Practice gratitude.
• Trust God with your worries instead of carrying them alone.
• Look for opportunities to serve others.

Did You Know?
Research has found associations between religious or spiritual involvement and greater hope, resilience, and life satisfaction. Faith can also give people a sense of purpose and belonging, and help them cope during difficult times.

One of the best things I’ve done as I’ve gotten older is strengthen my relationship with God. He is my source of strength, wisdom, ability and joy. I can’t imagine my life without Him – and I don’t want to try it!

Encouragement
You don't have to have all the answers. Simply take one step closer to God each day and trust Him to guide the journey.

We weren’t meant to carry every burden alone. If you’d like support in creating a healthier, calmer life, I’d be honored to help. Information is on my website.

Manage Stress Before It Manages You

Stress is a part of life, but it doesn't have to control your life. Learning to manage stress well can improve your physical health, emotional well-being, relationships, and quality of life.

Tips
• Notice the early signs of stress before they become overwhelming.
• Practice deep breathing or relaxation exercises.
• Exercise regularly.
• Spend time in prayer and quiet reflection.
• Break large problems into smaller, manageable steps.
• Don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it.

Did You Know?
Research has consistently found that chronic stress can affect nearly every system in the body, including the heart, immune system, digestion, sleep, and memory. The good news is that healthy stress-management techniques can reduce these effects and improve both physical and emotional well-being.

I believe we sometimes underestimate the toll of ongoing stress. It can disrupt sleep, affect digestion, and make it harder to feel and function well. That’s why noticing it early and practicing small ways to recover matter.

Encouragement
You may not be able to eliminate every source of stress, but you can choose healthier ways to respond to it.

Remember: Every healthy choice you make is an investment in your future self.

Choose a More Positive Mindset

We can't always choose our circumstances, but we can choose how we respond to them. A positive mindset doesn't ignore life's difficulties—it helps us face them with hope, resilience, and confidence.

I was working with a gentleman a while back whose main issue was to become more positive. He believes his negativity has colored most of his life – and he’s right! The good news is, that with practice and the right tools, we can all become more positive!

Tips
• Notice what you're thinking.
• Replace negative self-talk with encouraging truth.
• Practice gratitude every day.
• Focus on what you can control.
• Look for solutions instead of dwelling on problems.
• Spend time with positive, encouraging people.

Did You Know?
Research links optimism with well-being and some measures of physical health, and studies suggest that specific exercises can help people build optimism.
Fortunately, optimism isn't something we're simply born with—it can be learned and strengthened over time.

Encouragement
Being positive doesn't mean pretending life is easy. It means believing that, with God's help, you can face today's challenges and take the next step forward.

If you’d like extra support creating healthier habits, I work with clients online as well as in person. Information is on my website.

Nurture Meaningful Relationships

One of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is meaningful relationships. We were created for connection, and healthy relationships can enrich our lives, strengthen us during difficult times, and bring us tremendous joy.

Tips
• Make time for the people who matter most.
• Listen more than you speak.
• Express appreciation often.
• Forgive when possible.
• Set healthy boundaries with difficult people.
• Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

Did You Know?
Research consistently shows that people with strong social connections tend to be happier, healthier, more resilient, and even live longer. Healthy relationships can reduce stress, improve emotional well-being, and provide support during life's challenges.

I’ve been going through a personal challenge lately that has been tricky to navigate. A dear friend has met me for lunch twice – both times pretty much last minute. She has been a great sounding board and has provided understanding, good counsel and support. I treasure my relationships!

Encouragement
Invest in the people who invest in you. A simple phone call, text, or shared meal can strengthen a relationship more than you realize.

Remember: Every healthy choice you make is an investment in your future self.

Protect Your Sleep

Sleep isn't a luxury—it's one of the most important things you can do for your physical, emotional, and mental health.

Tips
• Keep a regular bedtime.
• Create a relaxing bedtime routine.
• Limit scrolling and bright screens before bed.
• Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.
• Avoid caffeine late in the day.
• If your mind races, practice relaxation or prayer before bedtime. I do a Tapping/Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) session every night before bedtime. I do it on an app in my phone as I’m lying in bed – most nights I doze off as I’m tapping. I love the way it helps calm my mind.

Did You Know?
Research has shown that good sleep supports:
• Better memory
• Stronger immune function
• Improved mood
• Better concentration
• Healthier weight
• Better heart health

People who consistently get enough quality sleep generally function better in almost every area of life.

Encouragement
Instead of asking, "How little sleep can I get by on?" ask, "How much better might I feel if I consistently got enough?"

Curious about natural approaches like hypnosis, EFT, or mindset tools for creating healthier change? I’d love to help. Details are on my website.
