Day one of rotations at Migori County Referral Hospital 🏥

Before the ward rounds begin, the paperwork comes first. On their first day, Caro & Simone sat down with the hospital team to review their university and hospital documents and walk through their rotation plan at this Level 5 county referral hospital.

Getting this right from day one means a supervised placement matched to your training level, and at the end, supervisor reports and certificates your university can recognise for credit.

That’s why hospital placement fees are built into every Elective Africa program, together with designated mentors, customised clinical rotations, Swahili lessons, Global Health tutorials, mentorship and local support. It’s all-inclusive, with no hidden fees.

🩺 Pack your scrubs and leave the groundwork to us. Your rotation in Kenya starts with one application 👇

Your textbook has a chapter missing. 📖

It's the one you can only read on a ward: surgery, emergency, OB-GYN and paediatrics at leading partner hospitals in Kenya and Tanzania, guided by experienced clinicians from day one.

Most medical students only ever read about these cases. You'll see them. You'll learn how great care is delivered with limited resources. And you'll come home with skills, stories and a perspective no lecture hall can give you.

Opportunities like this don't come around often in a medical career. This is your chance to take it.

👉 Come write the missing chapter yourself. Apply with us today!

Coconut shells to earrings, with community support at the heart of it. 🌴✨

This October, our fall participants, including a cohort from the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), visited the Bombolulu Workshops and Cultural Centre in Mombasa to discover how recycled materials, including coconut shells, are transformed into beautiful, valuable crafts.

They also explored Kenya’s cultural heritage through guided tours and traditional dance, connecting with the youth, women, and persons with disabilities whose creativity and skills are at the heart of the centre.

To round off the experience, our participants purchased handcrafted souvenirs, supporting Bombolulu’s work in creating opportunities and empowering the community. 🧡

At Elective Africa, we’re proud to offer experiences that encourage cultural exchange, meaningful connections, and a deeper understanding of the communities we visit.

Ready for your own experience in East Africa? Applications are open year-round for premedical internships, medical electives, nursing and dentistry internships, physician assistant internships, and public health and research internships in Kenya and Tanzania.

Meet Lara 💙

Lara landed in Mombasa for her medical elective program, and by the next morning she was standing at the entrance of the labour ward at Coast General Hospital, in navy scrubs, smiling for this photo.

She didn’t ease in. Day one, she started her rotation in labour and delivery, the department where she would spend her whole two-week elective.

That same afternoon, we took her around for her local area orientation: where to get around, where to eat, where to find what she needed. The next day, Dr. Amal took her through the hospital orientation and introduced her to how the wards and the maternity unit work.

From then on, the labour ward was her home for two weeks.

A labour ward in a busy public hospital teaches you quickly. Lara worked alongside Kenyan midwives, nurses and doctors who care for many mothers every day, often with limited resources. She saw how care is delivered here, and how much the staff manage to do with what they have.

Even the signs on the door are lessons. One beside the entrance reads “Usitumie chupa”, Swahili for “Don’t use a bottle”, part of the hospital’s work to encourage breastfeeding.

Two weeks went by fast. Lara has now gone home, taking with her experience from one of the busiest maternity units on the Kenyan coast.

Thank you, Lara, for your curiosity, your hard work and that smile that never left the labour ward. Kenya will always be glad to have you back!

✨ Thinking about an obstetrics or maternal health elective in Kenya? You could be like Lara... there is always a chance to be more of who you are, and Elective Africa helps you achieve that.

Some days on an elective have nothing to do with hospitals.

This was one of them.

Our UNMC cohort spent the day at Angels Academy in Mombasa. They came with donations, and they stayed for the children.

The pupils had prepared for them. On the blackboard, in careful chalk cursive: “Welcome our lovely VISITORS.” A classroom of children in green uniforms waited at their wooden desks, curious about the eight visitors in white T-shirts lined up at the front.

The introductions were a little nervous. One student read her greeting off her phone, in Swahili she had practised on the way over. The children watched closely, deciding what to make of everyone.

Then the donations were handed over and after that, the day changed. The formal part ended and the real visit began. Games outside. Laughter. Children teaching our students words in Swahili and correcting their pronunciation. Our students learning names, asking about favourite subjects, and losing at games they thought they understood.

Nobody was a visitor anymore. Just people spending an afternoon together.

Giving back is part of every Elective Africa program because our students don’t only learn in Kenya, they live here. The communities that host them deserve more than a thank-you. They deserve time, attention and support that lasts beyond the visit.

To our UNMC students: you gave your time and your hearts, and it showed.

This could be you. Contactus today!

First day on site, and the first thing everyone did was pull out their phones.
Not for selfies. For the signs.

The hospital’s departments are listed on the wall in both English and Swahili, and our students wanted to save them before heading in. Emergency, X-Ray, Mothers & Babies, Eyes, Dental. A lot to take in when you’ve only just arrived and everything is new.

That’s how day one usually goes. You figure out where things are, you get lost a couple of times, someone kindly points you the right way. By the end of the first week, the corridors start to feel familiar, and the people in them do too.

Thinking about an elective in Kenya or Tanzania? We’d love to hear from you.

This week, we’re putting a spotlight on frontotemporal degeneration (FTD) — a complex and often misunderstood brain disorder that can affect behaviour, personality, language and thinking.

World FTD Awareness Week brings families, healthcare professionals, researchers and advocacy organizations together to increase understanding of FTD and highlight the need for greater support and research.

🌍 The 2026 theme: “Put a Spotlight on FTD”

FTD can affect people in the prime of their lives, and its symptoms may sometimes be mistaken for changes in personality or behaviour. Raising awareness can help communities recognize the condition, support affected families and encourage earlier conversations with healthcare professionals.

This week, let’s learn, listen, share and put a spotlight on FTD. 💙
