Did you know that domestic violence affects more than 10 million people in the United States each year? Survivors often don’t know where to turn when they experience domestic violence, and that’s why the recent Clothesline Project, hosted by My Sister's Place, Inc., was such an inspiring event.

Community members decorated t-shirts with messages of encouragement, which were hung on clotheslines in Alethia Tanner Park to serve as a reminder to survivors that they are never alone. DCFNE was proud to attend this special event and share information about the forensic nursing care that is available to adult survivors in Washington, DC.

When survivors walk into a hospital in Washington, DC seeking a forensic exam, we want to make it easy for them to get the care they deserve. Because DCFNE's services are typically offered out of MedStar Washington Hospital Center, we partner with other local hospitals to ensure that staff know how to transfer patients to us.

Recently, DCFNE visited Howard University Hospital's Clinical Skills Fair, where nurses and other hospital staff were brushing up on a number of healthcare topics. We are grateful for the opportunity to share helpful reminders on how nurses from all hospital departments can best support the survivors in their care.

Did you know that survivors who request a forensic exam by calling the DC Victim Hotline (844-4-HELP-DC) will have access to free transportation? This is crucial for college students, who often cannot have vehicles on campus.

That’s one of the many things that DCFNE’s Outreach Team recently discussed with students at American University’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month Fair. Events like this are a great opportunity to share life-saving information with college students, so that survivors can find help when it matters most.

We are so grateful to DCFNE’s board member Leah Shoval for assembling these incredible comfort bags to support our patients before, during, and after the forensic exam.
