Stratford Festival ✨
At the beginning of the month I got to go to the Stratford Festival in Stratford, Ontario on scholarship with EMU Honors College 💚
I didn't expect to go on an international trip in my first month at EMU. Kinda unhinged to get in a van at 7am with people you haven't even introduced yourself to yet and flee the country, if you think about it.

I picked up a Musical Theatre minor to explore avenues of performing if my surgical injury no longer allows me to dance, but I was NOT a theatre kid (though I wanted to be!) and have pretty much hated musicals specifically my whole life. I also did singing lessons as a teen, did choir and loved to sing as a kid before I let society convince me that the only people allowed to are professional musicians 🥲

We saw 3 plays in 2 days (Something Rotten, Guys and Dolls, and The Tempest) went to a bunch of shops, laughed at intentionally or unintentionally inappropriately named cafes, and explored the Stratford food scene.
I walked away with a renewed respect for musical theatre and dare I say maybe even an obsession with Something Rotten? Didn't have a fav musical before, circumstance of hating them and all, but I can now say my all time favorite is Something Rotten!

I'm so glad I got to go, and I hope this is the first of many adventures during my time at EMU!

Back in school (who's surprised?) at EMU for Dance EMU Dance Program & Exercise Science
+ a minor in Musical Theatre

I auditioned before I knew the extent of my surgical injury and I still have no idea if I'll ever get the muscles back in my foot, which could affect my ability to dance.
I've been permitted to join the non-technique classes to give myself more time to recover, but I actually have no idea if I'll be able to finish my degree or be able to dance fully again.
I know I won't 100% recover, and will have permanent physical limitations and impairment, but I am still hopeful that I'll get enough back to be able to go on pointe again and hopefully be able to dance with more intensity again.
It's been a long time since I've been able to go across the floor, participate in jumps, turns, or even relevé.

I added the exercise science major to complement the health education I already have, and musical theatre was a very unexpected addition. I have 0 theatre experience and haven't had any music experience since 2014, but I wanted to give myself an avenue of performing to explore. Just in case my body doesn't let me dance anymore, I want something that keeps me onstage.

If you know me, you know how hard it has been to get to this point. Nothing about my life has followed a normal trajectory or timeline. A lot of the things that many people consider normal and take for granted have had massive barriers for me to do.
A normal college experience wasn't in the cards for me, but I'm so grateful to have a way to do it now. A few years ago, I never would have been able to guess I'd be here.

I can't wait for all the things I'll get to do in the next few years 💚

Realizing I never posted this video from a masterclass from Kai Jmari
This was day 1/3 of an intensive, and my whole group actually came into the class 30 mins late due to a scheduling issue 😅 so we were thrown in to pick it up mid combo, but I still feel like to went well considering, and it was fun!

My dance training at this point: I had just returned to hiphop classes after a 10 year hiatus (took casual classes for a few years as a teen) and was 4 months post op from my first ankle surgery. And 3 months post op from jaw surgery. I was definitely the oldest not just in the room but the whole intensive. I did the whole intensive with nerve damage, lack of feeling and muscle in my foot, and nerve pain due to my tibial nerve being severed during surgery 1 (I knew of the nerve damage because of the sensation and function issues, just didn't know why at the time).
It was definitely a challenge to put myself in an environment with so many kids 10-15 years younger who have had so much more access to training and exposure at an early age. While I'm used to dancing with younger dancers because of my unique history, dancing in NYC was another level. Compound that with dancing on a surgical injury, dealing with hypermobility issues and feeling like my body wasn't as resilient as the bodies around me.

That's a bittersweet feeling because it is hard to continually confront my past in the faces of young students who are leaps and bounds ahead of me and say "what if." But it always comes back to the fact that I made it to the room. I feel like the first day was the hardest, and by day 3 I had adjusted to pick up choreo so much faster. It really is a muscle. It's something I used to struggle with as a late starting teen and now I definitely feel like I have a moderate ability to pick things up.

I hope that after recovering from surgery 3 I can go back this Winter and finally get to go over the summer, just once 🩷 but grateful for the time that I did get to go because that experience is truly so elusive and rare, I can't help but to hold on tight to the things I learned and the fact that I finally made it to NYC, even if just for a few days.

Side quest from earlier this year was to learn to tap dance.
I never did tap when I was younger. I had an interest in it before I ever started dancing because I found tap shoes at the thrift store, but wasn't able to take a class.

I exchanged ballet lessons for tap lessons from a tap teacher who is newer to ballet ❤️ being resourceful and skill sharing has been a super helpful way to acquire new skills while saving money.

I picked it up pretty quickly but still have plenty to learn. I have a lot to do when I get back to it 🫪

Sharing a little bit more about my story as a dancer who has been surgically harmed leading to permanent injury.
The last 2 years have been rough, especially the last few months. During a time I imagined myself being back to 100% and I'm worse than before.

It means a lot to continue to share this journey, even though I wish I didn't have to. Without many other coping mechanisms, being able to create content as a sort of personal journal and documentation is helpful. Hopefully, in the future, I'll be able to use it to look back on how far I've come.

Thank you again to Fluence Arts Organization for being such an amazing company to work with, and making the choreo fit me to keep me involved.

Yeah I wore some pretty ridiculous costumes this year 😅 idk if the ghillie suit or the hedge is crazier. Year of the unhinged dance costumes
