Why are some areas of your feet more sensitive than others? 👣
In reflexology, tenderness isn't always dismissed as simply having sensitive feet. For some practitioners, it can offer valuable insight into what may be happening within the body.
There are different schools of thought within reflexology. Some practitioners believe that tenderness in a particular reflex area may indicate an imbalance associated with its corresponding organ or system. Others view tenderness doesn't necessarily reflect an underlying imbalance.
In my practice, I pay attention to these responses. Tenderness is information worth exploring, rather than something to ignore. I consider it alongside your health history, symptoms, physical condition and the other responses I observe during a session.
Of course, not all foot tenderness has the same origin. Previous injuries, muscle tension, tendon irritation and structural changes can all contribute to sensitivity. These factors deserve consideration, too.
From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, the body's meridian systems offer another way of understanding these patterns. For example, the Liver and Gall Bladder meridians are associated with the flow of Qi through systems that nourish muscles, tendons and ligaments. The Kidney and Bladder meridians come to mind when patterns involve bones and calcium use/formation in the body.
These are traditional frameworks for interpretation, rather than medically established explanations for why a particular area of the foot is painful.
So, what does tenderness actually tell us?
For me, it's a reason to pay closer attention, ask questions and consider the bigger picture. Reflexology is not simply about finding the sore spots and working it out. It's about listening to the body's responses and approaching each person as an individual.
And importantly, treatment should never be about enduring pain. Your comfort, communication and individual needs always matter. 🌿
