When we share a photo like this, you see an outing. What a photograph can’t fully show is the time spent listening, the conversations between activities and the relationships that develop when people keep showing up for one another.

That is what we want to build through Brothers from the Hood: opportunities for young men to connect, learn, try something new and feel part of a supportive community.

Behind those moments is practical work. Transport needs arranging, meals need preparing and sessions need planning. Support helps us do it again, beyond the day captured in a photo.

Tomorrow, 29 October, is the target date for our R20,000 General Fund appeal. Donations help meet programme and essential operating needs across the Dr Phil-Afel Foundation, wherever support is needed most.

If you can contribute, thank you. If you can share this with someone who may be able to help, we’d appreciate that too💚

When we share photos or videos from an outing or a programme, you see the people taking part. There is also a lot of work that happens before everyone arrives 💛

Before the transport pulls up, someone has planned the day, contacted the people involved, sourced supplies, arranged meals and followed up with families. There are indemnity forms to get signed, details to confirm and admin to keep on top of.

That preparation is part of caring for the people who join us. It takes time and resources.

Alongside the planning, coordination and admin, there are direct programme costs too. For example:
• R250 assists with women’s empowerment programme materials.
• R800 covers return transport for 15 BFTH young men.
• R1,200 covers snacks, lunch and drinks for 15 children on an outing.
• R2,500 contributes towards reintegration and post-release support.

These examples show just some of the costs involved. Our General Fund supports both direct programme expenses and the behind-the-scenes work needed to organise and run them. Donations are not tied to the examples listed; they are used where needed most across the Foundation.

We’re working towards R20,000 by Thursday, 29 October. If you’re able to contribute, any amount is appreciated. If donating isn’t possible right now, sharing this appeal can help us reach someone who may be able to support.

Thank you for being part of the community behind our work. Every donation, every share and every person who shows up helps us keep showing up 💛

A day in the waves, followed by conversations that brought us a little closer 🌊💚

On 26 September, our Brothers from the Hood group spent the day at the beach: warming up, getting ready and heading into the water for some surfing fun. Afterwards, we gathered in a circle for connection and discussion.

That balance matters to us. The outing gives us something to experience together; the conversation gives us time to listen and connect. Through BFTH, we’re creating those opportunities for our young men, alongside a team and community who support them.

This session was organised by Chazz Jurdd, a volunteer and member of our programme team. A huge thank you to Chazz, for organising and bringing it together and thank you to everyone who helped facilitate and support the day.

We’re also extremely grateful to Yani at Nexgen Surf, for providing wetsuits and boards, Gary’s Surf School, for helping with changing facilities and additional wetsuits, Curbside Kitchen, for the doughnuts, Hudsons Muizenberg, for providing discounted vegan meals for the group and the The Commons Muizenberg, for letting us use their studio space for our Brotherhood Circles and discussions, giving us a space to come together, listen and connect.

As a Foundation, we promote vegan choices because we believe compassion can extend beyond how we care for one another to how we treat animals and the planet. Sharing vegan meals is one practical way we bring those values into our community work.

Thank you to everyone who made space for the fun, the conversations and the connections that shaped this day 💚

Stay tuned for more programme updates! Our fifth monthly session is on 31 October, when we’ll come together for lunch, boxing and more Brotherhood Circles.

If you’d like to help us continue creating these experiences, you can support Brothers from the Hood here:

The moments we share from our programmes are made possible by the practical things behind them: transport to get there, a meal during an outing, materials for a workshop and people who keep showing up.

At the Dr Phil-Afel Foundation, this support helps us continue our work with children, young men through Brothers from the Hood, women through She Rises, and people rebuilding their lives through reintegration support.

We’re asking our community to help us raise R20,000 by Thursday, 29 October.

Donations go towards our General Fund, giving us the flexibility to meet needs across these programmes and keep the work moving.

You can also help by sharing this post with friends, family or a business that may want to support the work.

Thank you to everyone who gives, volunteers and helps us reach further 💛

Help Aisha Take Her Next Step 💛

Earlier this year, our community came together to support Aisha Elliott matric journey. Thank you to everyone who contributed to her studies and encouraged her along the way.

We’re proud to share that Aisha has passed English, Afrikaans and Geography! She is now preparing to rewrite Mathematical Literacy, History and Business Studies in 2027, attending night school three times a week.

Aisha is a mother of four girls and a community leader in Hanover Park who helps make our work at the Dr. Phil-afel Foundation possible. From communicating with families and collecting signed indemnity forms to helping coordinate outings, she is someone we can count on.

Alongside her studies and community work, Aisha has recently started working at Home Kitchen. She also runs a small food business from home and has prepared much-loved vegan salomies for some of our programme outings.

Now, we would love to help her build on this progress: complete her matric, strengthen her business and create more opportunities for herself and her family.

You can help with:
• Tutoring in Mathematical Literacy, History or Business Studies.
• Contributions towards her night-school fees.
• Study materials for her remaining subjects.
• A working smartphone - her current phone has been giving her problems, making it harder to manage her studies, community communication and food orders.
• Practical advice or support to grow her food business.

If you’re a teacher, retired teacher, student or someone confident in these subjects, an hour or two of tutoring a week could make a real difference.

To contribute towards Aisha’s matric studies:

Account name: DR PHIL AFEL FOUNDATION NPC
Bank: First National Bank (FNB)
Account number: 63093493509
Branch code: 250242
Reference: Aisha Matric

For tutoring, a phone donation, business support or other assistance, please message our page or email [email protected]

Aisha continues to show up for her community while working towards her own goals. Let’s show up for her too.

Please share this appeal, it may reach someone who can help.

From the mountains to the ocean 🥾🌊

On 29 August, our Brothers from the Hood boys and volunteers headed from Silvermine towards Muizenberg Cave for a day of hiking, connection, mentorship and new experiences.

The day began with Chief Kingsley opening the space through cultural ceremony, song and reflection before the group headed into the mountains. Thank you to Kingsley and Travel & Tours Cape Town for joining us for the first part of the day.

At the cave and along the trail, the group shared in breathwork, mindfulness, conversation and time together. Our guide, Tahir Osman, also shared his journey as a mountain guide, exposing the boys to another pathway within nature and tourism.

These experiences give our young men opportunities to explore new environments, encounter different cultures and perspectives, challenge themselves and continue building meaningful relationships with the men who show up for them month after month.

Thank you to everyone who’s been following the journey, supporting the programme and especially to our volunteers who continue to show up for the boys 💛

Next up: Beach Day on 26 September! 🏄

We’ll be taking the boys surfing in Muizenberg and are looking for men who surf and would like to volunteer, as well as anyone who can assist with additional wetsuits or access to equipment.
